Orville Peck<\/a> saluted the late Kenny Rogers<\/a> on Monday with a solo acoustic version of \u201cIslands in the Stream,\u201d the latter\u2019s 1983 hit with Dolly Parton<\/a>. The acoustic cover arrived midway through the masked country artist\u2019s livestreamed, at-home concert, which marked the one-year anniversary<\/a> of his debut LP, Pony<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is one of my all-time favorite country duets,\u201d he said while honoring Rogers, who died<\/a> three days earlier at age 81 from natural causes. Peck performed<\/span> \u201cIslands in the Stream,\u201d like the rest of his intimate set, against a living room wall adorned with string lights and cowboy art.<\/span><\/p>\n

Peck\u2019s livestream also included several Pony<\/em> tunes \u2014 including \u201cHope to Die,\u201d \u201cWinds Change\u201d and \u201cTurn to Hate\u201d \u2014 and closed with a new song. (A press release for the event notes that he will release a new track \u201cin the coming weeks.\u201d) He also welcomed a handful of guests, like comedian Margaret Cho, via video chat. <\/span><\/p>\n

The songwriter also repeatedly thanked his fans (or \u201cPeckheads\u201d) for tuning into the livestream \u2014 a format many artists are using as a regular performance platform<\/a> during the quarantine era of the COVID-19<\/a> pandemic. \u201cI just want to remind all of you that we have gotten through a lot of terrible stuff in our lifetime, in our civilization,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I think art and creativity and caring for one another and caring for ourselves and self-reflection \u2014 I think those things help us get through all of this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Peck, who performed<\/a> his song \u201cDead of Night\u201d on Jimmy Kimmel Live<\/i> in December, earned wide acclaim for Pony<\/i> \u2014 including a spot on the Rolling Stone<\/em> roundup of 2019\u2019s 40 Best Country and Americana Albums<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n
