Just weeks ago, Yola<\/a> joined Brandi Carlile, Jason Isbell, and other country music stalwarts onstage at Nashville\u2019s Marathon Music Works<\/a>, raising money to help those affected by the recent tornado that had ravaged the area.<\/p>\n

Since then, a much bigger crisis has unfolded across the world. While it\u2019s not clear when Yola will be able to perform in front of a live audience again, she was able to play some tunes for \u201cIn My Room,\u201d<\/a> our new IGTV series in which artists perform in intimate places in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

Yola said hello from her home in Nashville, with her housemates\/backing band, Birds of Chicago, standing by her side. (The musicians all live together in a house owned by Rhiannon Giddens of the Carolina Chocolate Drops<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re quarantined, like everyone\u2019s quarantined, and we\u2019re going to sing some songs for you,\u201d she said, shortly before everyone launched into an a cappella<\/em> performance of Etta James\u2019<\/a> \u201cAt Last.\u201d<\/p>\n

Next up, the band picked up instruments and played \u201cIt Ain\u2019t Easier,\u201d from Yola\u2019s debut album, Walk Through Fire, <\/em>released last December. The LP earned her a nomination for Best Americana Album at this year\u2019s Grammy Awards, alongside three other nominations, including Best New Artist.<\/p>\n

The quartet finished the set with a performance of \u201cSecond Cousin,\u201d one of the Birds of Chicago\u2019s original songs, featuring a vocal solo from Allison Russell. At the end of the song, Yola issued a stern warning: \u201cStay. In. Side!<\/em>\u201c<\/p>\n
