{"id":805810,"date":"2020-03-29T09:04:03","date_gmt":"2020-03-29T15:04:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=974815"},"modified":"2020-03-29T09:04:03","modified_gmt":"2020-03-29T15:04:03","slug":"krzysztof-penderecki-influential-polish-composer-dead-at-86","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/krzysztof-penderecki-influential-polish-composer-dead-at-86\/","title":{"rendered":"Krzysztof Penderecki, Influential Polish Composer, Dead at 86"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/7655992a.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Krzysztof Penderecki, the influential Polish composer and conductor whose work featured in <em>The Shining<\/em> and <em>The Exorcist<\/em>, has died at the age of 86.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Ludwig van Beethoven Association, founded by Penderecki\u2019s wife, Elzbieta, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/4f0625606fa9db485505cf2cfbec2cb8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed to<em> the Associated Press<\/em><\/a> that Penderecki died at his home an Luslawice, Poland following \u201ca long and serious illness.\u201d <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Poland\u2019s Ministry of Culture added that Penderecki was \u201cone of the greatest Polish musicians,\u201d noting that his death was \u201ca great and irreparable loss.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">An avant-garde composer who exploded onto the classical music world in the 1960s with works like <i>Polymorphia<\/i>, <i>St. Luke\u2019s Passion<\/i> and <i>Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima, <\/i>Penderecki is considered the godfather of the modern horror movie score: His pieces have been deployed in<em> The Shining<\/em>, <em>The Exorcist<\/em>, <em>Shutter Island<\/em> and numerous David Lynch projects, including <em>Twin Peaks: The Return<\/em>, <em>Inland Empire<\/em> and <em>Wild at Heart<\/em>, each utilizing Penderecki\u2019s spasmodic, shrieking strings to add surprise and dread to their respective scenes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Dp3BlFZWJNA?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Among Penderecki\u2019s many honors, the composer won four Grammy Awards, first in 1987 for Best Contemporary Composition and, most recently, in 2017 for Best Choral Performance for his <i>Penderecki Conducts Penderecki, Volume 1<\/i>. Penderecki was also awarded the prestigious Wolf Prize in Arts in 1987.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In recent years, Penderecki\u2019s works gained the attention of rock fans after the composer collaborated with Radiohead guitarist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/jonny-greenwood\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jonny-greenwood\" data-tag=\"jonny-greenwood\">Jonny Greenwood<\/a>, resulting in a joint album featuring their versions of Penderecki\u2019s <i>Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima<\/i> and <i>Polymorphia,<\/i>&nbsp;as well as Greenwood\u2019s <i>Popcorn Superhet Receiver<\/i>&nbsp;and a variations on <em>Polymorphia<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vwImX18AS_E?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHis pieces make such wonderful sounds,\u201d Greenwood <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2012\/feb\/23\/poles-collide-jonny-greenwood-penderecki\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told <em>The Guardian<\/em><\/a> in 2012. \u201cI think a lot of people might think his work is stridently dissonant or painful on the ears. But because of the complexity of what\u2019s happening \u2013 particularly in pieces such as&nbsp;<i>Threnody<\/i> and <i>Polymorphia<\/i>, and how the sounds are bouncing around the concert hall, it becomes a very beautiful experience when you\u2019re there. It\u2019s not like listening to feedback, and it\u2019s not dissonant. It\u2019s something else. It\u2019s a celebration of so many people making music together and it\u2019s like \u2013 wow, you\u2019re watching that happen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2019, Portishead\u2019s Beth Gibbons and composer Henryk Gorecki <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/portishead-beth-gibbons-live-lp-henryk-gorecki-symphony-no-3-786605\/\">released <em>Symphony of Sorrowful<\/em><\/a>, featuring Penderecki conducting the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Greenwood <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JnnyG\/status\/1244222286124720128\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a> Sunday, \u201cWhat sad news to wake to. Penderecki was the greatest \u2013<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>a fiercely creative composer, and a gentle, warm-hearted man.
