One day after John Prine<\/a>\u2019s family announced that singer-songwriter John Prine had been hospitalized and intubated after experiencing a sudden onset of COVID-19<\/a> symptoms, the singer\u2019s wife Fiona Whelan Prine provided an update on her husband\u2019s condition.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is stable,\u201d she wrote on Twitter Monday. \u201cPlease continue to send your amazing love and prayers.\u201d Reached for comment, a rep for John Prine clarified that the singer \u201cremains in the ICU and is stable on the respirator.\u201d Prine\u2019s rep confirmed that the musician tested positive for the coronavirus<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need to clarify what I mean by \u2018John is stable,’\u201d Fiona Prine wrote in a follow-up tweet<\/a>. \u201cThat is not the same as improving. There is no cure for Covid-19. He needs our prayers and love \u2013 as do the thousands of others who are critically ill. Stay at home. Wash your hands. We love you.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the 24 hours since the Prine family has announced John\u2019s condition, the singer\u2019s extended musical community, from Joan Baez and Roger Waters to Jeff Tweedy and Kacey Musgraves, has responded with an overwhelming display of support for the beloved singer. \u201cJohn Prine lives in all our hearts,\u201d Waters tweeted yesterday.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the loveliest people I was ever lucky enough to know,\u201d added Bette Midler. \u201cHe is a genius and a huge soul. Pray for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prine\u2019s wife Fiona announced last week that she herself had tested positive for the coronavirus, and was isolating herself from her husband. \u201cI was diagnosed with the coronavirus late last week,\u201d she said. \u201cJohn, however, was also tested and his test came back indeterminate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prine\u2019s health issues over the past few decades have been well-documented. In the late-Nineties, the musician was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer in his neck; after rounds of radiation, surgery and a year of rehabilitation, Prine returned to music. In 2013, Prine announced<\/a> he had an operable cancer, \u201cnon-small cell carcinoma,\u201d in his left lung, that briefly sidelined him. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is hard news for us to share,\u201d Fiona wrote over the weekend. \u201cBut so many of you have loved and supported John over the years, we wanted to let you know, and give you the chance to send out more of that love and support now.
