{"id":806016,"date":"2020-04-03T09:59:48","date_gmt":"2020-04-03T15:59:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=977994"},"modified":"2020-04-03T09:59:48","modified_gmt":"2020-04-03T15:59:48","slug":"bill-withers-lean-on-me-is-a-song-for-every-crisis-especially-this-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/bill-withers-lean-on-me-is-a-song-for-every-crisis-especially-this-one\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill Withers\u2019 \u2018Lean on Me\u2019 Is a Song for Every Crisis \u2014 Especially This One"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Withers.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/bill-withers\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bill-withers\" data-tag=\"bill-withers\">Bill Withers<\/a> wrote \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/lean-on-me\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lean-on-me\" data-tag=\"lean-on-me\">Lean on Me<\/a>\u201d in 1972, toying around on a small piano with only the phrase \u2018lean on me\u2019 to guide him, he never could have expected the song \u2014 about a rural man\u2019s loneliness in the big city \u2014 would become an inspirational anthem to those rising up after tragedy, or a celebratory rallying cry of togetherness and resilience in times of trouble.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Following the devastating earthquakes in Haiti in 2010, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FYXKp160JVQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u201cLean on Me\u201d was there<\/a>. Following the Hurricanes Irma and Harvey, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UysJARy1u2I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">as channeled through Stevie Wonder<\/a>, \u201cLean on Me\u201d was there. And as the nation faces its biggest crisis in a century \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/coronavirus\/\" id=\"auto-tag_coronavirus\" data-tag=\"coronavirus\">coronavirus<\/a> pandemic \u2014 \u201cLean on Me\u201d is there once again, a hymn for the self-isolated masses and a celebration of the medical professionals risking their own lives to save others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the weeks since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/covid-19\/\" id=\"auto-tag_covid-19\" data-tag=\"covid-19\">COVID-19<\/a> outbreak forced nearly all American citizens to adhere to a \u201cStay Home\u201d order, social media has been deluged with \u201cLean on Me\u201d viral clips spanning coast to coast, from the U.S., Canada, and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The West Virginia-born Withers once told Songfacts of \u201cLean on Me\u201d: \u201cThat\u2019s probably why somebody from New York did not write that song, or somebody from London, or somebody from a large city. It\u2019s a rural song that translates probably across demographical lines. Who could argue with the fact that it would be nice to have somebody who really was that way? My experience was, there were people who were that way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Once again, \u201cLean on Me\u201d has crossed all demographic lines. In an apartment building in Dallas, quarantined residents opened their windows and sang \u201cLean On Me\u201d together (one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/500-greatest-songs-of-all-time-151127\/bill-withers-lean-on-me-53629\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rolling Stone\u2019s <em>500 Greatest Songs of All Time).<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/399321586\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen>[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Outside a senior care facility in Calgary, relatives \u2014 unable to enter the home due to COVID-19 \u2014 instead congregated in cars on an adjacent street and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/player\/play\/1717424707675\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">serenaded their loved ones<\/a>, and<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> the face of what could be the most trying months of their medical careers, hospital staff, nurses and doctors \u2014 like at this Memphis hospital \u2014 have momentarily escaped the gruesomeness of their days by bonding together and singing the uplifting track:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Just last week, the Minnesota physician dubbed \u201cDr. Elvis\u201d recently performed the Withers classic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/watch-singing-surgeon-dr-elvis-perform-lean-me-live-today-t176902\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">on <em>The Today Show<\/em><\/a>, and country singers Tenille Townes, Caylee Hammack and more shared a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/tenille-townes-covers-lean-on-me-976539\/\">stripped-down, socially distanced rendition<\/a> of the track. These tributes, already touching, have now all been emotionally amplified following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/bill-withers-obituary-977929\/\">the death of Withers<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2006, in <a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/bill-withers-lean-on-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">an interview with <em>American Songwriter<\/em><\/a>, Withers hit on why the song connects with people in tumultuous times. \u201cRomantic love you only wanna touch people because they\u2019re pretty and they appeal to you physically.
