Vaughan Mason, the musician and producer whose influential disco<\/a>-funk singles \u2014 most notably his 1980 roller skating anthem \u201cBounce, Rock, Skate, Roll\u201d \u2014  have been sampled by dozens of artists ranging from Daft Punk<\/a> to a Tribe Called Quest, died Thursday of natural causes at the age of 69. <\/span>Mason\u2019s son Baron confirmed the musician\u2019s death to Rolling Stone<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

After a stint as a music manager and studio engineer, Mason \u2014 as Vaughan Mason & Crew \u2014 signed with Brunswick Records in 1980 and, in an effort to capitalize on the roller skating craze sweeping the nation, recorded the roller rink anthem \u201cBounce, Rock, Skate, Roll,\u201d a not-so-veiled homage to Chic\u2019s hit from the previous year, \u201cGood Times.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI bought a Billboard<\/i> magazine for the month of July and looked across every chart \u2014 pop, the Hot 100, the R&B chart, the dance chart, then club and radio play, and then 12-inch dance sales \u2014 looking for whichever song appeared in the top ten of each of those charts,\u201d Mason admitted to Electronic Beats<\/a> in 2015. \u201cWhether I liked the song or not, that\u2019s the song I was going to pick as a model for a new single. \u2018Good Times\u2019 fit those criteria.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
