{"id":806048,"date":"2020-04-04T14:09:07","date_gmt":"2020-04-04T20:09:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=977911"},"modified":"2020-04-04T14:09:07","modified_gmt":"2020-04-04T20:09:07","slug":"vaughan-mason-oft-sampled-bounce-rock-skate-roll-funk-artist-dead-at-69","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/vaughan-mason-oft-sampled-bounce-rock-skate-roll-funk-artist-dead-at-69\/","title":{"rendered":"Vaughan Mason, Oft-Sampled \u2018Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll\u2019 Funk Artist, Dead at 69"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/vaughan-mason-butch-dayo.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Vaughan Mason, the musician and producer whose influential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/disco\/\" id=\"auto-tag_disco\" data-tag=\"disco\">disco<\/a>-funk singles \u2014 most notably his 1980 roller skating anthem \u201cBounce, Rock, Skate, Roll\u201d \u2014&nbsp; have been sampled by dozens of artists ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/daft-punk\/\" id=\"auto-tag_daft-punk\" data-tag=\"daft-punk\">Daft Punk<\/a> to a Tribe Called Quest, died Thursday of natural causes at the age of 69. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Mason\u2019s son Baron confirmed the musician\u2019s death to&nbsp;<em>Rolling Stone<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After a stint as a music manager and studio engineer, Mason \u2014 as Vaughan Mason &amp; Crew \u2014 signed with Brunswick Records in 1980 and, in an effort to capitalize on the roller skating craze sweeping the nation, recorded the roller rink anthem \u201cBounce, Rock, Skate, Roll,\u201d a not-so-veiled homage to Chic\u2019s hit from the previous year, \u201cGood Times.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI bought a&nbsp;<i>Billboard<\/i> magazine for the month of July and looked across every chart \u2014 pop, the Hot 100, the R&amp;B chart, the dance chart, then club and radio play, and then 12-inch dance sales \u2014 looking for whichever song appeared in the top ten of each of those charts,\u201d Mason admitted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electronicbeats.net\/vaughan-masons-bounce-rock-skate-roll-story\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Electronic Beats<\/a> in 2015. \u201cWhether I liked the song or not, that\u2019s the song I was going to pick as a model for a new single. \u2018Good Times\u2019 fit those criteria.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p> <!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tr4O3dJcWm0?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Over the ensuing decades, \u201cBounce, Rock, Skate, Roll\u201d has been endlessly sampled and interpolated. Jimmy Spicer flipped the track for his 14-minute rap opus \u201cAdventures of Super Rhyme (Rap)\u201d in 1980, early-Nineties hip-hop artists like Digital Underground, Too Short, Heavy D and De La Soul all leaned on the funk track, while later electronic artists like Daft Punk (\u201cDa Funk\u201d) and the Avalanches (\u201cElectrified\u201d) would bring it to life again. R&amp;B group 112\u2019s 1996 hit \u201cOnly You\u201d with the Notorious B.I.G. also lifted Mason\u2019s bass line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIn 1978, I was working in a record shop, but was in a big rut,\u201d Mason told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soulandfunkmusic.com\/safm-related\/safm-artist-interviews\/221-interview-with-raze-feat-vaughan-mason.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Soul and Funk Music<\/a>. \u201cSo I borrowed $7,000 from friends and my first recording, \u2018Bounce Rock Skate Roll\u2019, was done within a few days. I made 10 acetates which got a lot of record company interest and it was soon a hit. I got to the stage where I was opening up for Prince and Rick James, and Slave even opened up for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Vaughan Mason &amp; Crew released two more singles \u2014 \u201cRoller Skate\u201d and \u201cJammin\u2019 Big Guitar,\u201d the latter Mason admitted was heavily inspired by Queen\u2019s \u201cAnother One Bites the Dust\u201d \u2014 before Mason linked up with singer Butch Dayo. In 1982, that duo released their <em>Feel My Love<\/em> EP that, while unsuccessful upon release, became a beloved artifact for crate-diggers and disco-funk fans. The EP, which would be reissued in 2019, contained beloved songs \u201cParty on the Corner\u201d and \u201cFeel My Love,\u201d the latter experiencing a resurgence in popularity in 2018 after it soundtracked a viral meme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jHnHH8Or9kM?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mason would later record and perform under the name Raze and scored a minor dance hit with 1987\u2019s \u201cBreak 4 Love.\u201d According to his son, Mason changed his name to Raze on the belief that since he was changing genres by recording dance music, he needed a new name. He would later call this one of the biggest regrets of his career. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Mason also served as producer on records by Doug Lazy, Barbara Joyce and Spyder-D, including the latter\u2019s \u201cSmerphie\u2019s Dance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI tell musicians and people all the time: feel the feel,\u201d Mason told Electronic Beats. \u201cMaking money in the music business is not about the music, it\u2019s about the feeling people have from what you\u2019re playing, and what you\u2019re playing will get to people faster if it moves like a record they know.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTo this day, it\u2019s human nature that if you hear something new, especially if you\u2019re a dancer who just goes to clubs and wants to dance, you want to feel that same vibe,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd that\u2019s what letting a song feel like a hot record which is out already \u2014 almost like a remix to the damn thing \u2014 does.
