Jeff Tweedy<\/a> shared an impromptu tribute to songwriter John Prine<\/a> with a cover of \u201cPlease Don\u2019t Bury Me\u201d on his nightly Instagram livestream, The Tweedy Show<\/em>. Prine died<\/a> Tuesday, May 7th, from complications related to COVID-19 at the age of 73.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease Don\u2019t Bury Me\u201d appeared on Prine\u2019s 1973 album, Sweet Revenge<\/i><\/a>, and found the musician crafting a delightfully surreal yarn about a man (also named John, probably not coincidentally) who slips on his kitchen floor, dies, goes up to heaven and tells the angels not to bury him \u2014 to instead cut him up and donate his organs and limbs.<\/p>\n

As such, it was a fitting tribute track and Tweedy delivered it with plenty of good humor \u2014 and, of course, plenty of sorrow \u2014 as his sons joined him on the chorus, singing in harmony, \u201cPlease don\u2019t bury me\/Down in that cold, cold ground\/No, I\u2019d rather have \u2019em cut me up\/And pass me all around.\u201d<\/p>\n

The performance initially appeared on the Instagram account<\/a> of Tweedy\u2019s wife, Susan, although a fan has since uploaded it to YouTube.<\/p>\n

Prine\u2019s death has elicited a wave of tributes from both his contemporary peers and the myriad artists he\u2019s influenced. For Instance, like Tweedy, Dixie Chicks frontwoman Natalie Maines took to Instagram in the hours after the songwriter\u2019s death and covered his signature song, \u201cAngel From Montgomery,\u201d<\/a> joined by her two sons.<\/p>\n
