The singer-songwriter performed the track at home on piano.<\/p>\n<p>He prefaced the performance by explaining that he was asked to write the song \u201cbecause of my scientific background,\u201d he cracked. \u201cApparently there\u2019s some disease that\u2019s going around. Stay six feet away from people. Wash your hands, religiously and often.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVenus in sweatpants\/That\u2019s who you are,\u201d he began. \u201cAnd when this mess is over\/I\u2019ll buy you a car.\u201d He sings the jovial lines in his signature voice: \u201cStay away from me\/baby, keep your distance, please\/stay away from me\/words of love in times like these.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish everyone well and wish myself well \u2014 to some extent,\u201d he told the camera. \u201cStay safe. It\u2019s hard for Americans who don\u2019t like being told what to do at all. But in this case, you know, let\u2019s do it. We\u2019ll be all right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newman wrote \u201cStay Away\u201d for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KPCC\/status\/1247940423131095041\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">KPCC<\/a>, a Southern California radio station that is<a href=\"https:\/\/support.kpcc.org\/donate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"> seeking donations<\/a> for their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/coronavirus\/\" id=\"auto-tag_coronavirus\" data-tag=\"coronavirus\">coronavirus<\/a> coverage.<\/p>\n<p>Newman composed the music for both <em>Toy Story 4<\/em> and <em>Marriage Story<\/em> in 2019. He&nbsp;appeared at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/movies\/movie-news\/randy-newman-2020-oscars-toy-story-4-948806\/\">2020 Oscars<\/a> in February, performing \u201cI Can\u2019t Let You Throw Yourself Away,\u201d from&nbsp;<em>Toy Story 4<\/em>.
