Brendan Benson<\/a> gets soaked in the animated video for \u201cRichest Man.\u201d The song is off his upcoming album Dear Life<\/em>, out April 24th on Third Man Records<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Directed by New York cartoonist Wartella, the clip features Benson in a dilapidated home as picture frames fall off the wall and a vase of flowers wilt. Despite the unfortunate circumstances, he\u2019s grateful for what really matters: \u201cI gave you your name, but you gave me my life,\u201d he sings, \u201cAnd you made this house a home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was a very different video-making experience,\u201d Benson tells Rolling Stone.<\/em> \u201cI had to pantomime the whole thing with notes from Wartella (who lives in another city), about the different scenes. I had to hold an imaginary umbrella and arrange an imaginary vase with flowers. It was all very mysterious and I had no idea if I was doing a good job or anything until it came back after being animated. Turns out I\u2019m a pretty good mime!\u201d<\/p>\n

Benson released \u201cRichest Man\u201d last month<\/a>, noting its theme of family life. \u201cI never thought I would write a song about domesticity!\u201d he said. \u201cWhen I wrote the words, I thought I would eventually change them to something a little less literal and \u2018family man,\u2019 but in the end, I decided I liked the lyrics for those two reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRichest Man\u201d is the second single off Dear Life<\/em>, following \u201cGood to Be Alive.\u201d<\/a> After postponing his spring tour due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Benson has continued his Boy in the Bubble series, in which he posts live performances on his Instagram<\/a> every day at 5:20 p.m. ET. He\u2019s been playing tracks from Dear Life<\/em>, as well as beloved Raconteurs<\/a> songs, including \u201cHands<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n
