Phoebe Bridgers<\/a> explores Japan in the new video for \u201cKyoto,\u201d the singer-songwriter\u2019s latest single. She also announced a new album, Punisher<\/em>, out June 19th via Dead Oceans.<\/p>\n

Shot on a green screen in Los Angeles, the clip features Bridgers flying over the ocean in a skeleton suit, stopping at an arcade and the Fushimi Inari-taisha shrine. \u201cYou called me from a payphone\/they still have payphones,\u201d she discovers. \u201cIt costs a dollar a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her bandmates and friends appear surrounded by flames as laser beams shoot out of Bridgers\u2019 eyes and she saves them from Godzilla. \u201cI don\u2019t forgive you, but please don\u2019t hold me to it,\u201d she sings, surfing along the subway rails. \u201cBorn under Scorpio skies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bridgers wrote \u201cKyoto\u201d after her first trip to Japan in February 2019. She initially planned to shoot the video there while supporting the National on tour<\/a> this spring, but the shows were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis song is about impostor syndrome,\u201d Bridgers said in a statement. \u201cAbout being in Japan for the first time, somewhere I\u2019ve always wanted to go, and playing my music to people who want to hear it, feeling like I\u2019m living someone else\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI dissociate when bad things happen to me, but also when good things happen,\u201d she continued. \u201cIt can feel like I\u2019m performing what I think I\u2019m supposed to be like. I wrote this one as a ballad first, but at that point I was so sick of recording slow songs, it turned into this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cKyoto\u201d follows the single \u201cGarden Song<\/a>,\u201d which Bridgers released last month accompanied by a video<\/a> of her smoking a bong with fuzzy creatures. She\u2019ll perform \u201cKyoto\u201d on Jimmy Kimmel Live!<\/em> on Thursday from her Los Angeles bathroom while in quarantine.<\/p>\n

Punisher<\/em> is Bridgers\u2019 second solo album, after 2017\u2019s Stranger in the Alps<\/em>. It was co-produced by Bridgers, Ethan Gruska and Tony Berg. The LP features her Boygenius bandmates Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, fellow Better Oblivion Community Center member Conor Oberst and legendary session drummer Jim Keltner.<\/p>\n
