{"id":806226,"date":"2020-04-09T11:22:15","date_gmt":"2020-04-09T17:22:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=981073"},"modified":"2020-04-09T11:22:15","modified_gmt":"2020-04-09T17:22:15","slug":"the-thing-ennio-morricone-and-john-carpenters-thriller-soundtracks-get-special-rereleases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/the-thing-ennio-morricone-and-john-carpenters-thriller-soundtracks-get-special-rereleases\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018The Thing\u2019: Ennio Morricone and John Carpenter\u2019s Thriller Soundtracks Get Special Rereleases"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/TheThing.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>The soundtrack to filmmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/john-carpenter\/\" id=\"auto-tag_john-carpenter\" data-tag=\"john-carpenter\">John Carpenter<\/a>\u2019s landmark sci-fi thriller <em>The Thing <\/em>will get special reconsideration this spring with two distinct LP reissues.<\/p>\n<p>The first features the original score by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ennio-morricone\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ennio-morricone\" data-tag=\"ennio-morricone\">Ennio Morricone<\/a> \u2014 best known for spaghetti westerns like <em>The Good, the Bad and the Ugly<\/em> and his Oscar-winning music for <em>The Hateful Eight<\/em> (which included music he\u2019d originally written for <em>The Thing<\/em>) \u2014 and the second, <em>Lost Cues: The Thing<\/em>, contains newly rerecorded music Carpenter himself wrote for the film. Both LPs are due out May 5th.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/prince-of-darkness-how-john-carpenter-made-an-eerie-soundtrack-of-his-own-228595\/\">interview with <em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>, Carpenter reflected on working with Morricone for the film, which stars Kurt Russell as a helicopter pilot battling an unseen enemy that takes over the bodies of researchers at a remote station in snowy Norway. \u201cHe\u2019s just fabulous and just genius,\u201d the director said. \u201cAll I said to him was, \u2018Fewer notes.\u2019 If you see <em>The Thing<\/em>, the ultimate theme is the result of our conversation: really simple, synth-driven, effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two years later, Morricone reflected on the score. \u201cThe collaboration with Carpenter was really something extraordinary and something very peculiar, as well,\u201d Morricone told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/ennio-morricone-goes-inside-hateful-eight-soundtrack-58788\/\">Rolling Stone<\/a><\/em>. \u201cHe came to Rome to show me the movie but immediately after the end of the screening, he had to rush away, so I couldn\u2019t speak to him. I was very impressed by what I\u2019d seen but I was concerned because he didn\u2019t give me any clue or indication about what he wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p>He went on to make several different cues in many different styles. \u201cIn the end, he chose just one single piece of music,\u201d Morricone said. \u201cNow one of the pieces he didn\u2019t use is in <em>The Hateful Eight<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"pmc-contextual-player\">\n<h3> Popular on Rolling Stone <\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The LP version of the original score for <em>The Thing<\/em>, which is coming out via Waxwork, features remastered audio and has been pressed on 180-gram \u201cblood sample,\u201d red-splattered vinyl. It also includes an 11-inch-by-22-inch poster.<\/p>\n<p><em>Lost Cues: The Thing<\/em>, which is coming out via Waxwork and Sacred Bones, contains music Carpenter recently recorded with his frequent collaborators, his son Cody and godson Daniel Davies. John Carpenter had decided to write additional music for the score while editing the film, but the masters for those recordings have since been lost, so he decided to rerecord them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnnio Morricone composed the magnificent score for my movie <em>The Thing<\/em>,\u201d Carpenter said in a statement. \u201cBecause we weren\u2019t finished editing the movie, Ennio had to score without seeing a complete picture. When we put everything together, there were gaps dramatically where I would have wanted music.
