Prine, whose family had links to the Bluegrass State, died on April 7th at the age of 73 from complications of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Wearing a battered straw hat, James gives an acoustic performance of four of Prine\u2019s songs from his home in Los Angeles, weaving his memories of hearing the music and meeting Prine between each rendition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of my favorite things about John\u2019s songs is how funny they are,\u201d James explains. \u201cIt\u2019s such an amazing thing that I don\u2019t feel like many people have mastered other than John \u2014 the ability to make a sad song so funny and a funny song so sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James\u2019 selections include \u201cSpeed of the Sound of Loneliness,\u201d from the 1986 album <em>German Afternoons<\/em>, followed by the surrealistic whimsy of \u201cSpanish Pipedream\u201d and the Kentucky-centric social commentary of \u201cParadise\u201d from Prine\u2019s self-titled 1971 debut album. James recalls seeing the cover of that album with Prine seated on the hay bale and feeling drawn to it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore I even heard a word, I knew that I would love the music on that record,\u201d James says. \u201cAnd I did, and it formed such a huge part of my consciousness and my growth as a musician.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James finishes things up with the empathetic tearjerker \u201cAll the Best,\u201d from Prine\u2019s 1991 album <em>The Missing Years<\/em>, prefacing it with a sincere wish of peace and safety for anyone watching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just hope everybody\u2019s doing ok out there and I just want to wish so much love and so much peace and so much safety, for yourself and your family,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd I wish so much love for John\u2019s family and for everybody that misses him so much right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/jim-james-tribute-john-prine-in-my-room-982170\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Rolling Stone<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kentucky ties run deep in the latest edition of \u201cIn My Room,\u201d in which My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James pays tribute to John Prine\u2019s inimitable songwriting.
