The album is a follow-up to Bryant\u2019s triumphant 2017 return-to-form <\/span><i><span>Don\u2019t Give Up on Love<\/span><\/i><span>, his first record in nearly a half-century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YQdgdd9kqes?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Bryant, 78, co-wrote every song on the new album, and \u201cIs It Over\u201d is a classic broken-down-romance tune from the singer who co-wrote the soul classic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=g5Rjo_imHDE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u201cI Can\u2019t Stand the Rain\u201d<\/a> for his wife Ann Peebles in the early Seventies.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSometimes people don\u2019t want to admit that a relationship is over, so they go round and round in a circle,\u201d Bryant tells <\/span><i><span>Rolling Stone<\/span><\/i><span> of what inspired the new track<\/span><span>. \u201cI wanted to ask, \u2019Is it over?\u2019 And if it is, should it be this way? If not, what\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The song, as Bryant\u2019s producer Scott Bomar puts it, \u201chas a classic sound that feels like it could have been cut in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/memphis\/\" id=\"auto-tag_memphis\" data-tag=\"memphis\">Memphis<\/a> or Muscle Shoals in the Sixties.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Bryant has been quarantining with Peebles, his wife of 46 years, at their home outside Memphis. \u201cI\u2019m trying to be as calm as I can,\u201d says Bryant. \u201cThe more I take my mind off it by playing music, the better I feel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bryant and Peebles worked together at Memphis\u2019 Hi Records during the label\u2019s Seventies heyday. He originally had ambitions to be a solo artist, but eventually settled into a background role. \u201cI wanted to be a part of it,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/how-southern-soul-survivor-don-bryant-finally-got-his-second-chance-119392\/\">told<em> RS<\/em><\/a> in 2017. If it wasn\u2019t gonna be the singing, I was content with trying to do the writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>Bryant says that the increased time at home has led to an unexpected period of creativity. \u201cI\u2019ve been writing new songs,\u201d he says. \u201cIt seems like every minute, I\u2019m hearing new songs come into my mind. I get down at the piano, come up with a verse.
