{"id":806433,"date":"2020-04-16T07:32:30","date_gmt":"2020-04-16T13:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=984535"},"modified":"2020-04-16T07:32:30","modified_gmt":"2020-04-16T13:32:30","slug":"see-onipas-bracing-video-for-promised-land","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/see-onipas-bracing-video-for-promised-land\/","title":{"rendered":"See Onipa\u2019s Bracing Video for \u2018Promised Land\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Onipa.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><span>The band Onipa, which specializes in merging traditional African musical styles with contemporary electronics, shine a light on the \u201ceveryday struggles of hard working people\u201d in their new video for \u201cPromised Land.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The lyrics offer a blunt indictment of contemporary inequality. \u201cThere was a promise of a promised land\/Milk and honey, streets of gold, the promise of a dying man,\u201d lead singer <\/span><span>Kweku Sackey intones.<\/span><span> In reality, that has become \u201ca promise where love for all is indeed love for some, a twisted tale of emotional control, where only the fortunate ones are a part of this master plan.\u201d \u201cWhere is the promised land?\u201d Sackey wonders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPromised Land\u201d was born \u201cin a whirlwind writing session in Kweku\u2019s rehearsal studio in Sheffield,\u201d guitarist Tom Excell explains in an email. \u201cI\u2019d driven a four-hour journey from London and within four hours of getting there we had four songs written and recorded \u2014 we barely even said hello to each other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The musical bed for \u201cPromised Land\u201d nods to \u201cMalian and Taureg artists such as Ali Farka Tour\u00e9, Bombino and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/tinariwen\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tinariwen\" data-tag=\"tinariwen\">Tinariwen<\/a>,\u201d Excell continues. \u201cFraming these traditional melodies in synth-driven grooves [creates something] akin to U.K. dance music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPromised Land\u201d appeared last month on Onipa\u2019s debut album, <\/span><i><span>We No Be Machine<\/span><\/i><span>.
