Michael McDonald<\/a> shared a tender acoustic performance of his 1986 smash with Patti LaBelle, \u201cOn My Own,\u201d on The Tonight Show<\/a><\/i> Thursday.<\/p>\n

Although the song is about a tough breakup, \u201cOn My Own\u201d carries an obvious resonance now as people continue to self-isolate during the coronavirus pandemic, which McDonald acknowledged before his performance. \u201cTo those of you out there who may be alone during this pandemic, we\u2019re thinking about you, and I dedicate this song to you,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I want you also to remember that although you may be alone right now, we\u2019re all in this together and there are better times ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n

McDonald then eased into \u201cOn My Own,\u201d letting his blissful baritone fly over the simple acoustic guitar progression, then vamping at the end, \u201cBy myself, I\u2019ve got to find out where I belong\/ I\u2019ve got to learn to be strong\/I know I\u2019ll never live my life alone\/By myself, by myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, McDonald released an unexpectedly timely remake of Marvin Gaye\u2019s classic, \u201cWhat\u2019s Going On.\u201d<\/a> He told Rolling Stone<\/i><\/a> that the recording was part of a \u201cvery simple project\u201d he\u2019s been working on and that he plans to release a series of singles over the next few months.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s nothing too ambitious, really,\u201d McDonald said of the project. \u201cJust myself and some local friends. We went up to a studio in Santa Barbara on the coast and just played some stuff live and decided what to record and hoped we\u2019d remember the words by the time we got to taping. We\u2019re all playing in one big room with an engineer. It\u2019s a barn and we\u2019re all on headphones in the same room trying to get out of everyone\u2019s way.\u201d<\/p>\n
