We asked some of our favorite artists (and some of Prine\u2019s) to play one of his classics. They didn\u2019t disappoint. Fellow Chicagoan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/jeff-tweedy\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jeff-tweedy\" data-tag=\"jeff-tweedy\">Jeff Tweedy<\/a> plays \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hLfOs6MvBPM\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Donald and Lydia<\/a>,\u201d the 1971 ballad Prine wrote on his mail route about a couple that \u201cmade love form ten miles away.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ashley-mcbryde\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ashley-mcbryde\" data-tag=\"ashley-mcbryde\">Ashley McBryde<\/a> performs a mini-set that includes a mournful take on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PnMNBTc1DQU\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">That\u2019s The Way the World Goes Round<\/a>\u201d and a deeply moving \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-ZI9XQAeopk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Mexican Home<\/a>,\u201d the song where Prine addressed the death of his father. (McBryde &nbsp;becomes emotional at one point, and needs to stop herself). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/todd-snider\/\" id=\"auto-tag_todd-snider\" data-tag=\"todd-snider\">Todd Snider<\/a> plays the underrated \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZACwVOJXpn0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">It\u2019s a Big Old Goofy World<\/a>.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/jim-james\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jim-james\" data-tag=\"jim-james\">Jim James<\/a> puts his own stamp on songs such as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eFvenjll1Bk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Speed of the Sound of Loneliness<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BofvfVPFbiM\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Spanish Pipedream<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DEy6EuZp9IY\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Paradise<\/a>.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/margo-price\/\" id=\"auto-tag_margo-price\" data-tag=\"margo-price\">Margo Price<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/jeremy-ivey\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jeremy-ivey\" data-tag=\"jeremy-ivey\">Jeremy Ivey<\/a> play a gospel version of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=e58y60Ozhxs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">All the Best<\/a>\u201d in their family home.<\/p>\n<p>Prine made a major impression on these artists. In his memoir, Tweedy said Prine was an early songwriting influence on him, for \u201cwriting songs that weren\u2019t that far removed from our own experiences.\u201d In 2017, Ashley McBryde <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmt.com\/news\/1803074\/ashley-mcbryde-talks-enviable-first-john-prine-concert\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">played at a Prine family reunion<\/a> in Kentucky and drank whiskey with her songwriting hero. Prine signed Todd Snider to his Oh Boy Records label in the Nineties, and they were performing together as recently last year. Jim James once <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PfppaV_l4SY\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">performed on <em>Letterman<\/em> with Prine<\/a>, and Price and Ivey were close friends with the Prine family, sometimes having dinner at Prine\u2019s Nashville home.<\/p>\n<p>After Prine\u2019s death, his family asked that, in leiu of flowers, fans donate to one of the following non profits: <a href=\"https:\/\/thistlefarms.org\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Thistle Farms<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roomintheinn.org\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Room in the Inn<\/a>, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/nashvillerescuemission.org\/in-memory-of-john-prine\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Nashville Rescue Mission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/prine-tribute-tweedy-mcbryde-jim-james-margo-price-todd-snider-985997\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Rolling Stone<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the course of his 50-year career, John Prine influenced everyone from Bob Dylan to Bon Iver, Kacey Musgraves, Swamp Dogg, and more.
