As promised<\/a>, the Wonders \u2014 the fictional band at the heart of That Thing You Do!<\/em> \u2014 reunited via Zoom Friday night to watch and provide commentary to the 1996 film. The watch party raised money for MusiCares\u2019 COVID-19 Relief Fund<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Actors Johnathon Schaech, Tom Everett Scott, Steve Zahn and Ethan Embry called in from their respective quarantines \u2014 technically their first reunion in 24 years \u2014 to reminisce about the beloved film alongside fans of That Thing You Do!<\/em> who watched along with the YouTube livestream.<\/span><\/p>\n

While the film\u2019s director (and the band\u2019s manager in the movie) Tom Hanks<\/a> didn\u2019t make it to the watch party as hoped, his son Colin Hanks (who had a brief role in the film) sat in for the majority of the screening. As Scott noted during the broadcast, Liv Tyler also wanted to partake but it was too late in the United Kingdom, where the actress is currently.<\/span><\/p>\n

The live-watch party also featured surprise cameos from actors Giovanni Ribisi, the One-ders\u2019 original drummer in the film, and Kevin Pollak, who played Pittsburgh DJ Boss Vic Koss and Zoomed in during his scene.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Wonders\u2019 reunion was a tribute in part to Fountains of Wayne\u2019s Adam Schlesinger<\/a>, who also penned the Wonders\u2019 hit \u201cThat Thing You Do!\u201d; Schlesinger died at the age of 52<\/a> from complications related to COVID-19. <\/span>\u201cAdam Schlesinger, we will always remember you,\u201d Scott said during the end credits.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prior to the watch party, the Wonders spoke to Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> about Schlesinger. \u201cHe had to make a song that sounded like it was a hit song from the Sixties,\u201d Scott said. \u201cIt had to have the words \u2018that thing you do,\u2019 because that came first. I remember them saying 300 songs had been submitted. But that was the one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
