Randy Newman<\/a>, via video, discussed his new quarantine love song \u201cStay Away<\/a>\u201d on CBS Sunday Morning<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The song was borne out of Newman\u2019s assignment to pen a social distancing public service announcement for Los Angeles, but eventually grew into a love song for his wife Gretchen.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI had an idea, because I knew I had to say \u2018Stay away from me,\u2019 and I sorta had that idea before I sat down,\u201d Newman told CBS Sunday Morning<\/em>\u2019s John Blackstone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gretchen added, \u201cWhen he said I\u2019d written a song for you, a love song, I thought, \u2018No, there\u2019s gonna be something not right about it. And it\u2019s beautiful, I have to say it\u2019s beautiful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Proceeds from \u201cStay Away\u201d benefit the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music in the 9th Ward, New Orleans; the Marsalis jazz family patriarch died April 1st due to complications related to COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n

The songwriter behind \u201cI Love L.A.\u201d was also asked whether he\u2019s curious about exploring a deserted Los Angeles in the midst of a statewide quarantine.  <\/span>\u201cWe\u2019re in, we\u2019re just here. I\u2019d love to see it in a different way like that. It\u2019d be stunning, when you\u2019ve spent 60 years looking at Sunset Boulevard or Olympic Boulevard, it\u2019d be stunning,\u201d Newman said.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for how they\u2019re spending their self-isolation, Newman said that he volunteered to help out with the household chores during the quarantine, but Gretchen didn\u2019t trust his vacuum skills. \u201cI feel bad, I\u2019m doing nothing,\u201d Newman said.<\/span><\/p>\n
