Billie Joe Armstrong<\/a> paid tribute to the late Adam Schlesinger<\/a> by covering the Wonders\u2019 \u201cThat Thing You Do!\u201d as part of his \u201cNo Fun Mondays\u201d quarantine series.<\/p>\n

Schlesinger, who died earlier this month at the age of 52<\/a> due to COVID-19<\/a> complications, wrote the title track to That Thing You Do!<\/em> featuring a fictional Sixties band called the Wonders. Armstrong adds pop-punk luster to the track, giving it a 21st century update \u2014 similar to his recent cover of the Bangles\u2019 \u201cManic Monday<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Wonders themselves reunited last week<\/a> for the first time since the film was released in 1996, watching the movie through a YouTube livestream as a way to honor Schlesinger. All donations were given directly to MusicCares\u2019 COVID-19 Relief Fund.<\/a><\/p>\n

Armstrong\u2019s cover comes days after the musician performed Green Day<\/a>\u2019s \u201cWake Me Up When September Ends\u201d for Global Citizens\u2019 One World: Together at Home<\/em> <\/a>TV special, curated by Lady Gaga. He performed a stripped-down version of the American Idiot<\/em> track, which he wrote about his father dying from cancer when he was 10 years old.<\/p>\n

Green Day released their 13th album, Father of All\u2026<\/em><\/a> in February. They postponed their tour in Asia<\/a> due to the pandemic, but are still scheduled to kick off their joint \u201cHella Mega\u201d summer tour<\/a> with Weezer and Fall Out Boy in Paris on June 13th.<\/p>\n
