The CDOT announced Saturday that two parking lots at the 11,990-foot pass would be barricaded &#8220;to prevent motorists from parking unsafely on US 6 while recreating on Loveland Pass.&#8221;<\/strong><br \/><em>Jason Connolly \/ jconnolly@summitdaily.com<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>LOVELAND PASS \u2014 The Colorado Department of Transportation <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"filled a couple of Loveland Pass pullouts with snow (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/news\/colorado-department-of-transportation-to-barricade-loveland-pass-parking-lots-sunday\/\">filled a couple of Loveland Pass pullouts with snow<\/a> Sunday in an effort to prevent illegal parking and dangerous driving conditions, and officials say the closures likely will last weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Parking in recreation areas has become a major issue for CDOT and law enforcement since statewide COVID-19 closures went into effect last month, driving residents and Front Range <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"visitors to popular gathering areas on the Western Slope (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/news\/loveland-ski-area-closes-uphill-access-after-social-media-images-show-large-weekend-gatherings-on-loveland-pass\/\">visitors to popular gathering areas in the Colorado Rockies<\/a>. But things hit a tipping point last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been a reoccurring problem and a growing problem,\u201d CDOT communications manager Elise Thatcher said. \u201cWe\u2019ve been working with the Department of Natural Resources and the Colorado State Patrol to try and reach as many people as possible to let them know you really have to be careful where you park on the pass because it\u2019s critical to allow hazmat vehicles to pass through safely. \u2026 We\u2019ve been trying to reach people about this issue for several weeks now. And it\u2019s a situation where it\u2019s actually getting worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, CDOT closed down two parking areas \u2014 essentially pullouts that have turned into parking lots for skiers, one at the top of the pass and another at the first hairpin turn near Loveland Ski Area \u2014 that overflowed with cars Saturday and had become dangerous for truckers making their way over the pass.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<div class=\"row sd-donation sd-donation-mobile p-0\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.summitdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/03\/SDN-logo-white-1.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.summitdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/03\/SDN-logo-white-1.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.summitdaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/03\/sdn-banner-paypal.jpg)\" class=\"col-xl-8 p-3 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/donate\/?utm_source=article&amp;utm_medium=website&amp;utm_campaign=donation&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=mid-article\">Donate<\/a><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Colorado State Patrol Capt. Jared Rapp said they received a complaint from a concerned truck driver Friday, and that Saturday looked like a repeat of the first weekend following the issuance of the public health order, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/news\/loveland-ski-area-closes-uphill-access-after-social-media-images-show-large-weekend-gatherings-on-loveland-pass\/\">large crowds first started packing backcountry hot spots<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Thatcher also said there were reports of a number of people physically standing and \u201changing out\u201d in the roadway.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-facebook wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-facebook\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOn Saturday, there was very heavy skier traffic and lots of difficulty for commercial motor vehicles trying to get through there,\u201d Rapp said. \u201cThose barricades were put in place as a last resort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thatcher said there were conversations about potentially using cones but that CDOT ultimately decided to plow in snow berms so that they couldn\u2019t be moved or lost. Officials say the method was useful in helping to prevent illegal parking and tight squeezes for truckers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was successful,\u201d Thatcher said. \u201cWe had supervisors up there on Sunday doing the rounds to see what the impact was, and they did not see anyone blocking the lanes.
