{"id":806659,"date":"2020-04-22T08:56:59","date_gmt":"2020-04-22T14:56:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=988096"},"modified":"2020-04-22T08:56:59","modified_gmt":"2020-04-22T14:56:59","slug":"listen-to-iggy-pops-lost-cover-of-sly-and-the-family-stones-family-affair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/listen-to-iggy-pops-lost-cover-of-sly-and-the-family-stones-family-affair\/","title":{"rendered":"Listen to Iggy Pop\u2019s Lost Cover of Sly and the Family Stone\u2019s \u2018Family Affair\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Iggy.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/iggy-pop\/\" id=\"auto-tag_iggy-pop\" data-tag=\"iggy-pop\">Iggy Pop<\/a> turned 73 on Tuesday and he celebrated by unearthing a cover of the Sly and the Family Stone classic \u201cFamily Affair\u201d that he recorded with funk icon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/bootsy-collins\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bootsy-collins\" data-tag=\"bootsy-collins\">Bootsy Collins<\/a> back in 1985.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always loved this song; it came out when I was kinda on the ropes in 1971,\u201d Iggy told the BBC. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of truth in it, especially in the second verse, about all sorts of questions that are coming around again now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The song has sat in his archive for the past 35 years. \u201cThen one day recently things had quietened down in daily life for everybody and for me, too, and I listened to it by accident,\u201d he said. \u201cIt just made me feel good and it was good company and I hoped that I could put it out and it would be company for somebody else, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pop\u2019s most recent record, 2019\u2019s <em>Free<\/em>, is a mellow, jazzy collection of songs he created in collaboration with trumpeter Leron Thomas and guitarist Sarah \u201cNoveller\u201d Lipstate. \u201cThe only difference from this Iggy and the one who founded the Stooges is the album\u2019s jazzy horns, synthy backdrops, and greater emphasis on Sinatra-style crooning,\u201d <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2018s Kory Grow wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/iggy-pop-free-review-880010\/\">review of the album.<\/a> \u201cAs luck would have it, the Iguana makes a convincing lounge lizard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pop promoted the album with a handful of special shows in Europe that featured nearly the entire new album along with a smattering of older songs like \u201cSister Midnight\u201d from 1977\u2019s <em>The Idiot<\/em> and the Stooges classic \u201cDeath Trip.\u201d He hasn\u2019t gone on a proper American tour since his 2016 <em>Post Pop Depression<\/em> run with Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme leading the backing band.<\/p>\n<p>Since the conclusion of that tour, Pop\u2019s live performances have been largely confined to overseas festival appearances.
