{"id":806759,"date":"2020-04-24T09:32:30","date_gmt":"2020-04-24T15:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=989549"},"modified":"2020-04-24T09:32:30","modified_gmt":"2020-04-24T15:32:30","slug":"mick-jagger-responds-to-paul-mccartneys-claim-that-the-beatles-were-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/mick-jagger-responds-to-paul-mccartneys-claim-that-the-beatles-were-better\/","title":{"rendered":"Mick Jagger Responds to Paul McCartney\u2019s Claim That \u2018the Beatles Were Better\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/JaggerPaul.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/mick-jagger\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mick-jagger\" data-tag=\"mick-jagger\">Mick Jagger<\/a> and Keith Richards went on Zane Lowe\u2019s Apple Music show this week to promote the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/listen-brand-new-rolling-stones-song-living-in-a-ghost-town-988880\/\">new Rolling Stones single, \u201cLiving in a Ghost Town,\u201d<\/a> which also gave them an opportunity to respond to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/paul-mccartney-howard-stern-interview-beatles-better-than-stones-984210\/\">Paul McCartney\u2019s recent claim<\/a> that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/beatles\/\" id=\"auto-tag_beatles\" data-tag=\"beatles\">Beatles<\/a> were a better band than the Stones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The Stones] are rooted in the blues,\u201d McCartney recently told Howard Stern. \u201cWhen they are writing stuff, it has to do with the blues. We had a little more influences. There\u2019s a lot of differences, and I love the Stones, but I\u2019m with you. The Beatles were better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is part of a friendly rivalry that goes back nearly 60 years, and Jagger laughed when it came up. \u201cThat\u2019s so funny,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s a sweetheart. There\u2019s obviously no competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/J73L2WRkd0U?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>But he did elaborate on what he saw as the big difference between the two bands. \u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/rolling-stones\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rolling-stones\" data-tag=\"rolling-stones\">Rolling Stones<\/a> is a big concert band in other decades and other areas, when the Beatles never even did an arena tour, Madison Square Garden with a decent sound system,\u201d he said. \u201cThey broke up before that business started, the touring business for real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe started doing stadium gigs in the Seventies and [are] still doing them now,\u201d he continued. \u201cThat\u2019s the real big difference between these two bands. One band is unbelievably luckily still playing in stadiums, and then the other band doesn\u2019t exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t address McCartney\u2019s claim that the Stones copied <em>Sgt. Pepper<\/em> when they released <em>Their Satanic Majesties Request.<\/em> \u201cWe started to notice that whatever we did, the Stones sort of did it shortly thereafter,\u201d McCartney said. \u201cWe went to America and we had huge success. Then the Stones went to America. We did <em>Sgt. Pepper,<\/em> the Stones did a psychedelic album. There\u2019s a lot of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Stones were supposed to launch another North American leg of their No Filter Tour this summer, but they\u2019ve had to indefinitely postpone the dates because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/rolling-stones-you-cant-always-get-what-you-want-together-at-home-special-986552\/\">perform \u201cYou Can\u2019t Always Get What You Want\u201d<\/a> on the recent One World: Together At Home broadcast.
