{"id":806765,"date":"2020-04-24T11:44:19","date_gmt":"2020-04-24T17:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=989683"},"modified":"2020-04-24T11:44:19","modified_gmt":"2020-04-24T17:44:19","slug":"neil-young-announces-new-1980s-archival-lp-road-of-plenty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/neil-young-announces-new-1980s-archival-lp-road-of-plenty\/","title":{"rendered":"Neil Young Announces New 1980s Archival LP \u2018Road of Plenty\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/neil-young-80s.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/neil-young\/\" id=\"auto-tag_neil-young\" data-tag=\"neil-young\">Neil Young<\/a> is still months away from releasing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/neil-young-preps-legendary-unreleased-1975-lp-homegrown-2020-916492\/\"><em>Homegrown<\/em><\/a> \u2014 the legendary lost LP he shelved in 1975 and recently decided to resurrect \u2014 but he\u2019s already plotting out his next archival releases. The newest one to enter the picture is a hodgepodge of work he recorded with Crazy Horse in 1986 and a short-lived band he assembled for a 1989 <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em> appearance. He\u2019s calling it <em>Road of Plenty<\/em> and is eyeing 2021 release.<\/p>\n<p>The title track is an early version of \u201cEldorado\u201d from 1989\u2019s <em>Freedom<\/em>. Young first attempted it during a private Buffalo Springfield reunion in 1986 that imploded very quickly. \u201cIt was my fault that we didn\u2019t get together at the time and have a reunion, tour and album,\u201d Young wrote this week in the <a href=\"https:\/\/neilyoungarchives.com\/news\/1\/article?id=Road-Of-Plenty-page-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><em>Road of Plenty<\/em> announcement.<\/a> \u201cI don\u2019t even know why. It was my own fault. I should have done it. Apparently I was distracted by other things at the time. Life was moving fast, perhaps a bit too fast for me to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4IhUMy4aNnI?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Fans first heard it in 1986 when he toured with Crazy Horse. \u201cWe have a monster take of it!\u201d Young writes. \u201cHow this song escaped is hard for me to believe\u2026 <em>Road of Plenty<\/em> includes that magical night in Minneapolis where the Horse nailed the song.\u201d (Young seems to be referring to an October 17th, 1986 concert at the Met Center in Bloomington, Minnesota.)<\/p>\n<p>Three years later, he recruited drummer Steve Jordan, bassist Charley Drayton and Crazy Horse guitarist Frank \u201cPoncho\u201d Sampedro for an appearance on <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em>. Their performance that evening of \u201cRockin\u2019 In the Free World\u201d is one of the greatest TV moments of Young\u2019s long career.<\/p>\n<p><!-- .l-article-content__pull--left --> <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JHs_f063EzQ?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring rehearsals for that show, we recorded some amazing music at the Hit Factory in NYC, all of which will appear on <em>Road of Plenty,\u201d<\/em> Young writes. \u201cMoving around a lot during that time, I was restless and it shows in the music. [Producer] Niko [Bolas] and I have been working on this project for a while and I think it will be a highlight of 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Proving his point, Young recently <a href=\"https:\/\/neilyoungarchives.com\/news\/1\/article?id=Sneak-Preview-60-0-page-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">shared an explosive, early rendition<\/a> of the <em>Freedom<\/em> track \u201cCrime In The City\u201d (titled \u201cSixty to Zero\u201d at the time) from these sessions on his website.<\/p>\n<p>As of now, the <em>Neil Young Archives\u2019<\/em> release schedule for Young\u2019s upcoming archival projects says that <em>Homegrown<\/em> is coming June 19th, <em>Return to Greendale<\/em> on July 17th, <em>The Neil Young Archives Volume 2<\/em> on August 21st, the 1990 Crazy Horse club gig <em>Rust Bucket<\/em> on October 16th and the 1971 solo acoustic show <em>Young Shakespeare<\/em> on November 27th. All of these dates should be seen as provisional at the moment. These are homemade concerts Young has been filming at the Colorado home he shares with wife Daryl Hannah. \u201cFireside Session IV is now in production,\u201d Young writes. \u201cAfter a little break, we are back filing Fireside sessions at home today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the pandemic, Young planned on touring America this year with Crazy Horse. He still hopes to take them out when mass gatherings are once again legal and safe. Whenever that happens, there\u2019s a chance that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will be out at the same time, which would make new Crazy Horse guitarist Nils Lofgren unable to join them.
