David Byrne<\/a>\u2019s Reasons to Be Cheerful<\/a> online magazine has launched a new series exploring \u201cthe once-in-a-generation potential of the extraordinary changes\u201d occurring in response to the COVID-19<\/a> pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a catalyzing moment and many of the changes that have been made or contemplated are going to be permanent \u2013\u2013 some of those are good, and some deeply questionable,\u201d Byrne said in a statement. <\/span>\u201cWe at Reasons to be Cheerful of course want to know: how can we keep the good stuff? Who is doing it (it\u2019s already happening) and how those ideas and initiatives are working out?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The series, \u201cNow Anything Is Possible,\u201d launched Friday with an op-ed by the same name<\/a> penned by journalist Mitch Anderson, which likens our current situation to America emerging out of the Great Depression thanks to the New Deal.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIs this another moment of elemental change? Could the pandemic catalyze structural reforms and societal shifts to make the future more resilient, sustainable and fair? Or, after the crisis subsides, will the old systems snap back into place, leaving us roughly where we were \u2014 or worse \u2014 before this all began?\u201d Anderson wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n

In late March, Byrne penned an op-ed titled \u201cThe World Is Changing \u2014 So Can We<\/a>\u201d that similarly addressed the pandemic and its potential for change. \u201cWhat is happening now is an opportunity to learn how to change our behavior,\u201d Byrne wrote. \u201cFor many of us, our belief in the value of the collective good has eroded in recent decades. But in an emergency that can change quickly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Byrne launched Reasons to Be Cheerful<\/a> in August 2019 as a \u201ctonic for tumultuous times.\u201d The singer said at the time: \u201cWe hope to balance out some of the amplified negativity and show that things might not be as bad as we think.\u201d Byrne is a frequent contributor to the site, recently penning an article<\/a> praising Texas\u2019 investment in wind energy and wondering why the nation doesn\u2019t follow suit.<\/span><\/p>\n
