In the month of May for the last two years, Metallica<\/a> has encouraged fans to volunteer at food banks and give back to their communities for their \u201cDay of Service,\u201d organized through their charitable organization All Within My Hands. Since the coronavirus<\/a> pandemic has created even more need in the world, this year the band has decided to host the All Within My Hands Month of Giving.<\/p>\n

\u201cInspired by today\u2019s #GivingTuesdayNow<\/a>, a new global date of giving in response to the global need caused by COVID-19<\/a>, we\u2019re going to spotlight four organizations we\u2019re supporting throughout this crisis,\u201d drummer Lars Ulrich<\/a> said in a video statement. \u201cEach week this month, we will share with you what these organizations do and show you how you can chip in to help. We\u2019ll be contributing proceeds from special weekly featured merchandise in the Metallica store and continuing to donate funds raised during the #MetallicaMondays<\/a> streaming concerts.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first charity the band is spotlighting is Feeding America<\/a>, which partners with food banks around the United States. They\u2019ll also be supporting Crew Nation<\/a>, Live Nation\u2019s initiative to provide relief to touring and venue crews; the United States Bartenders Guild Foundation<\/a>, which benefits bar workers and people in the service industries; and Direct Relief<\/a>, which aims to support medical professionals and first responders across the U.S.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know times are tough for so many right now, and we truly appreciate the phenomenal support you\u2019ve given us, our All Within My Hands, and these other worthy organizations,\u201d Ulrich said. \u201cIf you would like more information and\/or contribute, all the details are on AllWithinMyHands.org<\/a> right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2018, when Metallica launched their first Day of Service, Ulrich wrote an op-ed for Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> in which he detailed why he felt it was important for his fans to give back to their communities. \u201cWe are spreading the word amongst our fans, encouraging them to roll their sleeves up in their local communities and help out,\u201d he wrote. \u201cDo what you can to get your hands dirty, as dirty as possible! In Metallica\u2019s lingo, we are proud of how the words \u2018we,\u2019 \u2018us,\u2019 and \u2018family\u2019 are the verbal cornerstones that not only keep us connected but feeling like we are part of something greater than ourselves and moving forward in tandem.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later that year, Metallica recorded a live acoustic album<\/a> at a benefit concert they hosted in San Francisco to raise money for relief following that year\u2019s spate of California forest fires. The set list contained songs that translated easily to acoustic instruments (\u201cUnforgiven,\u201d \u201cNothing Else Matters\u201d), a few retrofitted deep cuts (\u201cDisposable Heroes\u201d), and covers of Blue \u00d6yster Cult and Nazareth songs.<\/p>\n

More recently, Metallica made a socially distanced video<\/a> of an acoustic version of their \u2026 And Justice for All<\/em> track \u201cBlackened.\u201d In an interview with Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> last week, Ulrich said the group has been considering its options of how to make music at a time when they can\u2019t perform live. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to figure out how we can come back and play and under what circumstances we\u2019ll be facing,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd if we\u2019re going to be sitting here for a while, we\u2019re figuring out how to connect musically and start firing up the creative process again under these new realities.\u201d<\/p>\n
