Nick Lowe<\/a> released \u201cDon\u2019t Be Nice to Me,\u201d a single off his upcoming EP Lay It on Me<\/em><\/a>, out June 5th on Yep Roc Records.<\/p>\n

Backed by the Nashville outfit Los Straitjackets, Lowe kicks off the track with lines that stand in stark contrast to the laidback guitar: \u201cDon\u2019t be nice to me\/I\u2019m undeserving of your kind attention.\u201d Later, he takes the point even further: \u201cWhen I find a rock big enough for me to crawl under\/I\u2019m gonna hang a sign outside to the world: \u2018Stay away.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t Be Nice to Me\u201d follows the single \u201cLay It on Me Baby,<\/a>\u201d a track inspired by sampler LPs invented by CBS in the late Sixties \u2014 which he discussed with his friends once night over dinner. \u201cDuring what might be described as the \u2018port and cigars\u2019 part of the evening, we found ourselves riffing on the idea of producing a sampler for an imaginary record label of its imaginary artists,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Last month, Lowe performed a brief set for Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2018s \u201cIn My Room<\/a>\u201d series, where artists play music from home in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic. Accompanied by his son, Roy, Lowe breezed through \u201cLay It on Me Baby,\u201d \u201cTrombone,\u201d \u201cI Read a Lot\u201d and \u201c(What\u2019s So Funny \u2018Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding,\u201d a classic he wrote for Elvis Costello.<\/p>\n
