{"id":807193,"date":"2020-05-07T08:40:07","date_gmt":"2020-05-07T14:40:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=995280"},"modified":"2020-05-07T08:40:07","modified_gmt":"2020-05-07T14:40:07","slug":"vicky-cornell-calls-soundgarden-countersuit-salacious-scurrilous-and-vicious","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/vicky-cornell-calls-soundgarden-countersuit-salacious-scurrilous-and-vicious\/","title":{"rendered":"Vicky Cornell Calls Soundgarden Countersuit \u2018Salacious, Scurrilous, and Vicious\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/GettyImages-1183815474W.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Following the surviving members of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/soundgarden\/\" id=\"auto-tag_soundgarden\" data-tag=\"soundgarden\">Soundgarden<\/a>\u2019s <span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/soundgarden-vicky-cornell-countersue-charity-995168\/\">countersuit<\/a> against&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/chris-cornell\/\" id=\"auto-tag_chris-cornell\" data-tag=\"chris-cornell\">Chris Cornell<\/a>\u2019s widow Vicky over the singer\u2019s final recordings, Vicky Cornell\u2019s legal team issued a statement decrying the accusations as \u201csalacious, scurrilous, and vicious.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Soundgarden\u2019s countersuit, members Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron and Ben Shepherd accused Vicky Cornell and Chris\u2019 estate of \u201cfraudulent inducement\u201d for allegedly using revenue intended to be raised for charity for \u201cpersonal purposes for herself and her family.\u201d The suit alleges the \u201crecipient(s) of the revenue\u201d from the &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-live-reviews\/chris-cornell-soundgarden-tribute-show-780340\/\">\u201cI Am the Highway: A Tribute to Chris Cornell\u201d concert in January 2019<\/a> \u201chave not been identified.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt is unfortunate that Chris Cornell\u2019s three former bandmates \u2013 who have made millions of dollars from Chris\u2019 hard work, talent and creativity \u2013 continue to attack Chris\u2019 legacy, his widow, and his young children by making salacious, scurrilous, and vicious allegations in order to distract from the truth,\u201d Vicky Cornell\u2019s lawyer Marty Singer responded in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTheir transparently desperate counterclaims do not change the fact that they are the ones who have improperly asserted ownership of vocal recordings that were created solely by Chris and that they are the ones who have unlawfully withheld substantial sums of money from Chris\u2019 widow and children (which is the very basis for the current lawsuit).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Singer said of those accusations, \u201cAs Chris\u2019 former band members are well aware, every single penny of the proceeds generated by the concert were properly allocated and accounted for and their statements are not only false and defamatory but demonstrate the depths to which Chris\u2019 former bandmates are willing to sink to tarnish his legacy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At the heart of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/chris-cornell-vicky-cornell-soundgarden-lawsuit-royalties-924015\/\">the lawsuit<\/a> between Soundgarden and Vicky Cornell are a series of unreleased recordings Cornell made prior to his May 2017 death; the band says the vocals were destined for Soundgarden\u2019s next album, while Vicky Cornell contends the recordings were Chris\u2019 \u201csole and exclusive property.\u201d Vicky also accused the band\u2019s surviving members of withholding royalties related to their music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In addition to Singer\u2019s statement, Cornell\u2019s widow also criticized Soundgarden over social media. \u201cAs my beloved Chris would say, \u2018They\u2019ve reached a whole new low.\u2019 A very easily disproven one\u2026,\u201d she wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/vickycornell\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">her Instagram Stories<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen you attack the foundation, you attack my husband\u2019s legacy. The foundation has nothing to do with the issue of who owns Chris\u2019s vocal recordings. Their knowingly false allegations are a deliberate attempt to not just harm my credibility but the Foundation my husband and I created and everything WE stand for\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Full Statement \u2013 Vicky Cornell\u2019s Lawyer Marty Singer Responds to Soundgarden Countersuit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt is unfortunate that Chris Cornell\u2019s three former bandmates \u2013 who have made millions of dollars from Chris\u2019 hard work, talent and creativity \u2013 continue to attack Chris\u2019 legacy, his widow, and his young children by making salacious, scurrilous, and vicious allegations in order to distract from the truth.&nbsp; Their transparently desperate counterclaims \u2013 which were intentionally filed shortly before the eve of the anniversary of Chris\u2019 death and the eve of Chris and Vicky\u2019s wedding anniversary \u2013 do not change the fact that they are the ones who have improperly asserted ownership of vocal recordings that were created solely by Chris and that they are the ones who have unlawfully withheld substantial sums of money from Chris\u2019 widow and children (which is the very basis for the current lawsuit).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Suffice it to say that Vicky Cornell and the Cornell Estate vehemently deny the supposed \u201cfacts\u201d contained in Soundgarden\u2019s counterclaims, which will be met with swift legal action.&nbsp;
