Bob Dylan<\/a> will release his first album of original songs in eight years, Rough and Rowdy Ways<\/a>,<\/em> on June 19th, according to an Amazon pre-order listing<\/a>. Dylan also dropped a third song from the album, the swaggering, guitar-heavy \u201cFalse Prophet<\/a>,\u201d which follows \u201cMurder Most Foul\u201d and \u201cI Contain Multitudes.\u201d  \u201cI ain\u2019t no false prophet,\u201d Dylan growls over a slinky striptease-blues groove, powered by a downright filthy fuzz-guitar riff. \u201cI just know what I know.\u201d<\/p>\n

The song\u2019s lyrics veer between existential weariness, Willie Dixon-worthy boasts, unabashed come-ons (at one point addressing two women \u2013 \u201cMary Lou\u201d and \u201cMiss Pearl\u201d \u2013 at once) and more spiritual allusions. He nods to a Zen koan with a line about \u201cclimbing a mountain of swords with my bare feet,\u201d quotes Martin Luther\u2019s phrase \u201cenemy of strife,\u201d tells a \u201cpoor devil\u201d to look up at a \u201ccity of God,\u201d and ends the song by casually singing \u201cI can\u2019t remember when I was born\/ and I forgot when I died,\u201d followed by a fusillade of lead guitar.<\/p>\n

Dylan, who won the 2016 Nobel Prize in literature, has long rejected the title of prophet, false or not. \u201cYou feel like an impostor when someone thinks you\u2019re something and you\u2019re not,\u201d he told 60 Minutes<\/em>\u2018 Ed Bradley in 2004. \u201cI never wanted to be a prophet or savior. Elvis, maybe. I could easily see myself becoming him. But prophet? No.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a widely reported passage from a 2007 memoir, former Pope Benedict wrote that he was unhappy with Dylan\u2019s appearance at a Vatican youth event: \u201cThere was reason to be skeptical \u2013 I was, and in some ways I still am \u2013 over whether it was really right to allow this type of \u2018prophet\u2019 to appear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dylan\u2019s last album of new songs was 2012\u2019s Tempest<\/em>, which he followed with three collections of standards: Shadows in the Night<\/em>, Fallen Angels<\/em>, and Triplicate<\/em>. Rough and Rowdy Ways<\/em>, which is almost certainly named after the 1929 Jimmie Rodgers classic \u201cMy Rough and Rowdy Ways,\u201d will be his 39th studio album, landing 57 years after his debut LP.<\/p>\n
