Even though the 40th anniversary of Mot\u00f6rhead\u2019s landmark Ace of Spades<\/em> album is still half a year away, the band has dropped a strobing new lyric video for their signature song on Friday. They\u2019re dubbing May 8th \u201cMot\u00f6rhead Day,\u201d as \u201cAce of Spades\u201d sounds a little like \u201cEighth of May.\u201d Frankly, though, every day should be \u201cMot\u00f6rhead Day.\u201d<\/p>\n

The band\u2019s frontman, Lemmy Kilmister<\/a>, often groused during his lifetime that \u201cAce of Spades\u201d became their hit. \u201cWhen we wrote it, we were just doing an album,\u201d he told Rolling Stone<\/a><\/em> once. \u201cIt\u2019s just fucking another song. I thought it was pretty good, but I didn\u2019t think it was that<\/em> good. \u2026 I was surprised when the song took off. It\u2019s no better than all the others.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that even though the song was about gambling, he wasn\u2019t really a card player. \u201cI don\u2019t have any good gambling stories; I have lots of bad ones,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve lost a lot of money. \u2026 I\u2019m not a poker player; I play slot machines. I\u2019ve been playing them since I was about 18, when you were getting into bars. I don\u2019t trust any form of gambling with people involved in it; I like the machines better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gambling aside, the clip perfectly plays off the band\u2019s biker-cowboy look from the album art.<\/p>\n

In addition to the lyric video, the band is driving home its \u201cMot\u00f6rhead Day\u201d concept with Facebook and Instagram filters that superimpose the band\u2019s Snaggletooth logo over people\u2019s faces. They\u2019re also selling merch<\/a> that sports the title of the Ace of Spades<\/em> track \u201c(We Are) the Road Crew,\u201d the proceeds from which benefit Live Nation\u2019s Crew Nation<\/a> initiative, in turn supplying relief to concert-industry workers during pandemic-related shutdowns.<\/p>\n
