{"id":807264,"date":"2020-05-09T07:30:21","date_gmt":"2020-05-09T13:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=996655"},"modified":"2020-05-09T07:30:21","modified_gmt":"2020-05-09T13:30:21","slug":"andre-harrell-founder-of-uptown-records-dead-at-59","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/andre-harrell-founder-of-uptown-records-dead-at-59\/","title":{"rendered":"Andre Harrell, Founder of Uptown Records, Dead at 59"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/8876394by.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Andre Harrell, the music executive who founded the influential Uptown Records, has died at the age of 59.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">DJ D-Nice first announced during his weekly Club Quarantine series Friday that Harrell died, but no cause of death was provided, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/music\/news\/andre-harrell-dead-dies-executive-motown-signed-sean-p-diddy-puffy-combs-1234602676\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Variety<\/em> reports<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Bronx-born Harrell entered the music business as one-half of the hip-hop duo Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde. The group scored some minor hits (including \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fEusjv45hjg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Genius Rap<\/a>\u201c) before Harrell began exploring the business side of music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 1983, Harrell began working under Russell Simmons and that music mogul\u2019s Def Jam Records. Three years later, Harrell founded his own label, Uptown Records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSo many can say they are successful because Andre Harrell gave them their start,\u201d Simmons wrote in a tribute following news of Harrell\u2019s death Friday. \u201cHe was so beloved because he made his living uplifting others\u2026 We celebrate him in his passing because we were so blessed for his presence\u2026 He gave everything he had.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.4210526315789\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\" xml:lang=\"en\">Why Andre \ud83d\ude22\ud83d\ude22\ud83d\ude22 My heart is breaking and I can&#8217;t stop crying. Sure and Mary J. Blige, who as a teenager signed with Harrell\u2019s label. In 1992, Uptown partnered with MCA on a multimedia deal that allowed Harrell to produce films, TV shows and movie soundtracks, including the 1991 comedy <em>Strictly Business<\/em> and TV series <em>New York Undercover<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHe gave you the best soundtracks of your life man and you didn\u2019t even know it. We never gave him his flowers. He redefined the party,\u201d Questlove wrote of Harrell Friday. \u201cDef Jam was the artform. Bad Boy was the attitude. Death Row was the muscle. But without even knowing it? Uptown was ALWAYS the party.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Harrell\u2019s onetime intern Sean \u201cPuffy\u201d Combs would later step into an A&amp;R role at Uptown during the label\u2019s most successful years in the early Nineties. However, tensions rose between Harrell and Combs and the latter, after being fired from Uptown, quickly formed Bad Boy Records, taking the recently discovered the Notorious B.I.G. with him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Combs\u2019 exit signaled Uptown\u2019s decline, and in 1995, Harrell himself would leave the label he founded to become CEO of Motown Records, although that stint was short-lived. Two decade later, Combs would hire his old boss Harrell to serve as vice chairman of the rapper\/producer\u2019s Revolt music network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, BET announced plans for a miniseries based on Uptown Records\u2019 rise, with Harrell in a producer role.
