{"id":807485,"date":"2020-05-15T11:42:33","date_gmt":"2020-05-15T17:42:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=1000519"},"modified":"2020-05-15T11:42:33","modified_gmt":"2020-05-15T17:42:33","slug":"hear-built-to-spills-wistful-cover-of-daniel-johnstons-tell-me-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/hear-built-to-spills-wistful-cover-of-daniel-johnstons-tell-me-now\/","title":{"rendered":"Hear Built to Spill\u2019s Wistful Cover of Daniel Johnston\u2019s \u2018Tell Me Now\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Johnston.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/built-to-spill\/\" id=\"auto-tag_built-to-spill\" data-tag=\"built-to-spill\">Built to Spill<\/a> dropped a cover of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/daniel-johnston\/\" id=\"auto-tag_daniel-johnston\" data-tag=\"daniel-johnston\">Daniel Johnston<\/a>\u2019s \u201cTell Me Now\u201d Friday, off their upcoming LP <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/built-to-spill-daniel-johnston-cover-album-bloody-rainbow-945835\/\">Built to Spill Plays the Songs of Daniel Johnston<\/a>,<\/em> out June 12th.<\/p>\n<p>Released off the late cult artist\u2019s 1991 album <em>Artistic Vice<\/em>, the song gets a more subtle rendition from Built to Spill. \u201cYou\u2019ll never know dear, the tears that I cry,\u201d frontman Doug Martsch sings. \u201cI don\u2019t want to wait, girl, \u2019til the day that I die\/Tell me now, oh oh, do you really love me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell Me Now\u201d follows the sparkling \u201cBloody Rainbow\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uCpO5x5ziL8&amp;feature=youtu.be\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Mountain Top<\/a>,\u201d the latter of which the band released accompanied by a video directed by Zach Gayne featuring animation by Tomoko Uryu.<\/p>\n<p><em>Built to Spill Plays the Songs of Daniel Johnston&nbsp;<\/em>was recorded as a trio, consisting of Martsch, bassist Jason Albertini and drummer Steve Gere. The record consists of 11 songs that chronicle Johnston\u2019s final tour in 2017, when Built to Spill served as his backing band.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasically, we wanted to get a good documentation of what our rehearsals were like,\u201d Martsch recently told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>.&nbsp;\u201cIt was pretty special for us,\u201d he said of playing with Johnston. \u201cIt was a lot heavier than what I thought it would be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martsch recently pledged his support for a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hihowareyou.org\/pledge\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">new initiative<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/jeff-tweedy-sharon-van-etten-join-daniel-johnston-hi-how-are-you-project-999649\/\">Hi, How Are You Project<\/a>, the mental-health nonprofit inspired by the legacy of Johnston.
