{"id":807589,"date":"2020-05-19T08:43:33","date_gmt":"2020-05-19T14:43:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=1002234"},"modified":"2020-05-19T08:43:33","modified_gmt":"2020-05-19T14:43:33","slug":"see-mark-lanegan-cold-caves-joy-division-tribute-isolation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/see-mark-lanegan-cold-caves-joy-division-tribute-isolation\/","title":{"rendered":"See Mark Lanegan, Cold Cave\u2019s Joy Division Tribute, \u2018Isolation\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ian-curtis-joy-division-tribute.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>To mark the 40th anniversary of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/joy-division\/\" id=\"auto-tag_joy-division\" data-tag=\"joy-division\">Joy Division<\/a> frontman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ian-curtis\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ian-curtis\" data-tag=\"ian-curtis\">Ian Curtis<\/a>\u2019 death, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/mark-lanegan\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mark-lanegan\" data-tag=\"mark-lanegan\">Mark Lanegan<\/a> teamed up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/cold-cave\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cold-cave\" data-tag=\"cold-cave\">Cold Cave<\/a> for an icy rendition of \u201cIsolation,\u201d a track off of Joy Division\u2019s final album, 1980\u2019s <em>Closer<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Lanegan joined Cold Cave in a room for a live performance, singing side-by-side and trading vocals with the darkwave band\u2019s frontman Wesley Isold. Lanegan nods along to the beat, looking as though he\u2019s absorbing the vibe, as the group plays the tune\u2019s skittery rhythms and chilly synth lines.<\/p>\n<p>The performance was part of the online event, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/new-order-brandon-flowers-ian-curtis-livestream-999141\/\">Moving Through Silence: Celebrating the Life of Ian Curtis<\/a>, which also featured tributes and reminiscences by the Killers\u2019 Brandon Flowers and members of New Order \u2014 the group that Joy Division\u2019s members formed after Curtis\u2019 death. The remaining members formed New Order later that year and paid tribute to Curtis on their nearly 18-minute song, \u201cElegia,\u201d which came out on their 1985 album, <em>Low-Life<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In the broadcast, former Joy Division guitarist Bernard Sumner, who has fronted New Order since that band formed, reflected on meeting Curtis for the first time at a punk gig. \u201cI met Ian and his friend, confusingly [also] called Ian, and called them the two Ians [that night],\u201d he said. \u201cAnd then [later] put an advert at Virgin Records in Piccadilly to try to find a singer. I was the only one who had a phone. I just got a load of idiots ringing up and people who weren\u2019t on the same wavelength or crazy or called up and put the phone down. I thought, \u2018Jesus.\u2019 And it was going on and on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then the last phone call I got, I picked it up and started talking to this guy and thought, \u2018He sounds all right and he\u2019s into the kind of music we\u2019re into \u2014 the Clash and Sex Pistols and Lou Reed and Iggy and all that and Kraftwerk \u2026 \u2018\u201d he continued. \u201cThat was the first question I asked [people]: What kind of music do you like? So, he was into the same music, and then we got talking and I thought, \u2018This guy sounds all right. He sounds OK.\u2019 And then I found out he was one of the two Ians that I\u2019d met. \u2026 \u2018I said, all right. You\u2019ve got the job. You\u2019re the singer.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lanegan \u2014 who has covered several Joy Division songs, including \u201cAtmosphere,\u201d \u201cLove Will Tear Us Apart\u201d and \u201cDead Souls\u201d at gigs over the years \u2014 recently released a memoir, <em>Sing Backwards and Weep<\/em>, and a new album, <em>Straight Songs of Sorrow<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>He reflected on the process of writing the book \u2014 which includes often devastating stories about Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love and Layne Staley, among others \u2014 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/mark-lanegan-interview-memoir-kurt-cobain-layne-staley-978123\/\">an interview with <em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>. \u201cWriting this was like being buried under a mountain of just shitty memories every day,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I remember [my friends] being like, \u2018Oh, you\u2019re gonna get the most cathartic experience out of this. It\u2019s gonna put all these ghosts to bed.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Dude, the ghosts have been put to bed.
