Rex\u2019s \u201cScenesof,\u201d off the upcoming tribute compilation <em>Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/marc-bolan\/\" id=\"auto-tag_marc-bolan\" data-tag=\"marc-bolan\">Marc Bolan<\/a> and T. Rex,<\/em> out September 4th on BMG.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScenesof\u201d was originally released off T. Rex\u2019s 1968 debut <em>My People Were Fair and Had Sky in Their Hair\u2026 But Now They\u2019re Content to Wear Stars on Their Brows<\/em>, produced by Tony Visconti. Banhart offers a serene interpretation of the track, complete with synthesizers and the trippy production of the late Hal Willner, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/hal-willner-obituary-979949\/\">died last month due to complications from COVID-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was completely in love with Marc Bolan, from John\u2019s Children to <em>Dandy in the Underworld<\/em> and everything in between,\u201d Banhart said in a statement. \u201cI remember the feeling of freedom I got from \u2018Scenescof\u2019: \u2018I don\u2019t need anyone to dictate all my fun smile your smile and then run.\u2019 That line gave me the courage to carve out a little bit of fantasy in my life back in my late teens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut now, the song will be inextricably linked with mourning; it was the last time I was in a studio with my dear dear friend Hal Willner,\u201d he continued. \u201cI haven\u2019t even begun to process the heartbreak of that loss\u2026we were just texting about Jerry Lewis and sending each other links to funny videos and weird songs and two weeks later he was gone. Hal had the coolest, calmest demeanor, the kind that comes from having had really been through some shit and come out of it still caring about life, the world and art.
