Seven years after the death of Magnolia Electric Co. mastermind Jason Molina<\/a>, a collection of music the singer recorded while living in London will be released for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eight Gates<\/em>, due out August 7th via Molina\u2019s longtime label Secretly Canadian<\/a>, features the last solo studio recordings Molina made prior to his 2013 death at the age of 39<\/a>. The label also shared the collection\u2019s first single, the stark \u201cShadow Answers the Wall.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The nine songs on Eight Gates<\/em> were recorded in 2009, roughly two years after Molina left the Midwest U.S. for London, and after the singer faced a \u201cdebilitating bout of illness\u201d following a bite from a \u201crare, poisonous spider,\u201d Secretly Canadian said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was in the hospital here in London,\u201d Molina wrote in a letter. \u201cSaw six doctors and a Dr. House-type guy. They are all mystified by it, but I am allowed to be at home, where I am taking a dozen scary Hantavirus type pills a day that are all to supposedly help \u2014 but they make me feel like shit.\u201d Although no evidence of the doctor visit or prescription exists, Molina allegedly wrote Eight Gates<\/em>\u2019 songs while recuperating.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[Molina would] pick up on arcane trivia about London\u2019s rich history, and if the historical factoids weren\u2019t available \u2014 or weren\u2019t quite to his liking \u2014 Molina conjured his own,\u201d Secretly Canadian added of the album\u2019s title. \u201cWhen he learned of the London Wall\u2019s seven gates (itself a misconception), Molina went ahead and called it eight, carving out a gate just for himself. The eighth gate was Molina\u2019s way into London, a gate only passable in the mind.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Molina last released his solo Autumn Bird Songs<\/em> in 2012, a year before his March 2013 death from organ failure brought on by alcohol consumption.<\/span><\/p>\n
