Sammy Hagar<\/a> and the Circle\u2019s newest Lockdown Sessions video is a cover of Little Richard<\/a>\u2019s 1957 classic \u201cKeep a-Knockin,’\u201d which they recorded as a tribute to the late rock & roll pioneer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had the hardest time with this one because every time I came in singing, I started singing Led Zeppelin\u2019s \u2018Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll!’\u201d Hagar wrote. \u201cIt took me three damn takes. My favorite drummer and my favorite singer of all time \u2014 love this one hope you do too. Long live the music of John Bonham and Little Richard!\u201d<\/p>\n

As Hagar indicates, the drum intro to the song is practically identical to John Bonham\u2019s intro to Led Zeppelin\u2019s \u201cRock and Roll.\u201d His son, Jason Bonham, plays in the Circle. \u201cJason knows, everyone knows, that John Bonham stole that from Little Richard,\u201d Hagar told Rolling Stone<\/em> earlier this month.<\/a> \u201cHe\u2019s playing on drums what Little Richard is singing. Our version is fun shit, man. We\u2019re doing it in honor of Little Richard.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hagar and the Circle \u2014 which also features former Van Halen<\/a> bassist Michael Anthony and guitarist Vic Johnson \u2014 have been posting weekly Lockdown Sessions videos over the past two months. Previous songs include the Who\u2019s \u201cWon\u2019t Get Fooled Again,\u201d Buffalo Springfield\u2019s \u201cFor What It\u2019s Worth\u201d and Van Halen\u2019s \u201cGood Enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I like about them more than anything is it\u2019s not a whole performance,\u201d Hagar said. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to be in physical shape like you do for a two-hour show. I couldn\u2019t do that now, but I could do one song. And my voice is strong. We can get so creative. There\u2019s no pressure. Nobody paid for anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hagar and the Circle originally planned on touring this summer with Whitesnake and Night Ranger, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to change their plans. Hagar has no idea when they\u2019ll be able to reschedule, but he recently told Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> that whenever concerts start happening again, he hopes that Van Halen will invite him and Anthony back into the fold for a reunion tour.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know that Eddie and I are not done,\u201d he said. \u201cIf enough water goes under the bridge before we die, it\u2019ll happen. It has to. God is going to slap us both around if he has to.\u201d<\/p>\n
