Grimes<\/a> is taking the phrase \u201cselling out\u201d to a very literal extreme. That\u2019s the title of her first online art exhibition, presented by Gallery Platform Los Angeles<\/a> (May 28th through June 3rd) and Maccarone Los Angeles<\/a> (May 28th through August 31st).<\/p>\n

But amid all the photographs, drawings, sketches and other visual works presented in the show, there\u2019s also a work titled \u201cSelling Out,\u201d in which Grimes will sell a piece of her actual soul to the highest bidder.<\/p>\n

This is far from the first trollish move that Grimes has pulled (remember her Adidas-sponsored \u201cwellness\u201d routine<\/a>), but this may be the first where actual monetary gain is on the line. Originally, Grimes priced out her soul-piece for $10 million, making the possibility of someone actually purchasing a contract highly unlikely. She\u2019s now put it up for auction at \u201cbest offer,\u201d due to the current global recession and the slightly \u2014 slightly<\/em> \u2014 bad optics of putting a seven-figure price tag on an abstract concept within your gallery show.<\/p>\n

Self-imposed Faustian deals aside, it\u2019s amazing that Grimes hasn\u2019t done a visual art show like this sooner \u2014 she\u2019s created all the cover art for her albums. \u201cI see myself as a visual artist first and foremost,\u201d Grimes told Bloomberg<\/em><\/a> of her show, \u201cand I\u2019ve always felt strange that people know me for music.\u201d She described the pieces as \u201ca continuation of, rather than a departure from, her music.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe deeper we got with it, the more philosophically interesting it became,\u201d she said. \u201cAlso, I really wanted to collaborate with my lawyer on art. The idea of fantastical art in the form of legal documents just seems very intriguing to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
