{"id":807942,"date":"2020-05-30T13:16:32","date_gmt":"2020-05-30T19:16:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=1007961"},"modified":"2020-05-30T13:16:32","modified_gmt":"2020-05-30T19:16:32","slug":"music-industry-reacts-to-george-floyd-death-with-grassroots-black-out-tuesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/music-industry-reacts-to-george-floyd-death-with-grassroots-black-out-tuesday\/","title":{"rendered":"Music Industry Reacts to George Floyd Death With Grassroots \u2018Black Out Tuesday\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/10664057k.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Following the killing of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/george-floyd\/\" id=\"auto-tag_george-floyd\" data-tag=\"george-floyd\">George Floyd<\/a> and nationwide protests, dozens of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/music-industry\/\" id=\"auto-tag_music-industry\" data-tag=\"music-industry\">music industry<\/a> members have pledged to join a grassroots campaign to make June 2nd \u201cBlack Out Tuesday.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Billed as \u201ca day to disconnect from work and reconnect with our community,\u201d the campaign \u2014 boasting the hashtag #TheShowMustBePaused \u2014 has gained support from people like Dirty Hit Records\u2019 Jamie Oborne, former Hot 97 music director Karlie Hustle and Beats 1 host Ebro Darden. <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/music\/news\/music-industry-companies-blackout-george-floyd-solidarity-1234620870\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Variety<\/em> first reported<\/a> on Black Out Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cDue to recent events please join us as we take an urgent step of action to provoke accountability and change,\u201d the viral post states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAs gatekeepers of the culture, it\u2019s our responsibility to not only come together to celebrate the wins, but also hold each other up during a loss.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In supporting Black Out Tuesday, Darden wrote on social media, \u201cAll of my shows are cancelled. I will air replays of conversations with community activists, politicians and revolutionary music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CAymxP0lfJB\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"12\" readability=\"-4.552734375\"><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Record labels have also spoken out against the killing of Floyd in recent days, including Columbia Records, Universal Music Group, Warner Music, Sony Music and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIn the words of Dr. King, \u2018There comes a time when silence is betrayal.\u2019 When you have a responsibility to raise your voice for change. That time has come,\u201d UMG wrote on social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThere\u2019s no place in this world for hate and violence. In the face of bigotry and prejudice, we\u2019re proud of the way our artists, songwriters and employees have spoken out. At UMG, we\u2019re committed to being a force for constructive change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Columbia wrote, \u201cWe stand together with the Black community against all forms of racism, bigotry, and violence.
