{"id":807975,"date":"2020-06-01T07:38:22","date_gmt":"2020-06-01T13:38:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=1008280"},"modified":"2020-06-01T07:38:22","modified_gmt":"2020-06-01T13:38:22","slug":"minneapolis-singer-songwriter-dua-saleh-releases-police-brutality-lament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/minneapolis-singer-songwriter-dua-saleh-releases-police-brutality-lament\/","title":{"rendered":"Minneapolis Singer-Songwriter Dua Saleh Releases Police Brutality Lament"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/09_Dua_Saleh_by_Izzy_Commers_2.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Five days after George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer, Twin Cities artist and activist Dua Saleh has released \u201cBody Cast,\u201d a mournful missive that chronicles the trauma and violence caused by police brutality.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/m6SX0tRel_A?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The song begins with audio from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=2394751660746459\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">2019 incident<\/a> in which a cop enters a black family\u2019s home in Virginia without any stated reason (\u201cYou are violating my right, sweetheart\u201d) before Saleh begins the first verse: \u201cY\u2019all been dodging camera like they bullets over crime,\u201d they sing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis song is about police brutality and injustice,\u201d Saleh said in a statement. \u201cThis is a song I made with Psymun last year and intended to save it for a project in the future but I can\u2019t wait that long with what is happening in my city of Minneapolis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saleh released the song as a charity single, with all proceeds going to Black Visions Collective, an organization Saleh works with in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the same cycle of violence that we have seen before,\u201d Saleh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/minneapolis-george-floyd-protests-musicians-1007450\/\">told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> this past Thursday, after the third night of protests in the Twin Cities. \u201cThe last few days have been full of emotional anguish, triggers, and mobilization efforts. The community is grieving. George Floyd\u2019s family is still mourning.
