As protests<\/a> continued around the U.S. following the death<\/a> of George Floyd<\/a>, Peter Gabriel<\/a> wrote Monday in a moving Twitter<\/a> statement that he was \u201chorrified\u201d by the \u201cracist murder.\u201d \u201cThis type of brutality needs to be confronted directly, with justice clearly seen to be done whenever & wherever it occurs,\u201d the songwriter wrote, using the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter.<\/p>\n

The art-rock singer, who co-founded the human rights non-profit WITNESS in 1992, noted<\/a> that the organization has been \u201chelping groups monitoring police violence.\u201d He added, \u201cI hope these protests will not only lead to the addressing of the problems at the root of this, but also encourage a worldwide look at how each country is dealing with racism and religious persecution within their own borders.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gabriel cautioned that politicians are \u201ctrying to win support by fueling nationalism and racism for their own gain.\u201d He concluded<\/a>, \u201cIf we don\u2019t like the way things are going, we have to speak out and act. The world can only be what we choose to make it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The musician also announced that his Real World record label and long-running WOMAD arts festival will observe the newly announced \u201cBlack Out Tuesday\u201d event<\/a> on June 2nd \u201cin solidarity with black artists all over the world, and black colleagues in the music industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event\u2019s organizers have asked the industry to refrain from \u201cbusiness as usual\u201d on Tuesday and instead reflect on how to aid the black community.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour black executives, artists, managers, staff, colleagues are drained, traumatized, hurt, scared, and angry,\u201d Jamila Thomas, Senior Director of Marketing at Atlantic Records, wrote in a statement<\/a> on Friday, using the hashtag #TheShowMustBePaused.<\/p>\n
