{"id":808054,"date":"2020-06-03T12:01:50","date_gmt":"2020-06-03T18:01:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=1009226"},"modified":"2020-06-03T12:01:50","modified_gmt":"2020-06-03T18:01:50","slug":"hear-bob-mould-rage-against-the-president-and-evangelicals-on-american-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/hear-bob-mould-rage-against-the-president-and-evangelicals-on-american-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Hear Bob Mould Rage Against the President and Evangelicals on \u2018American Crisis\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Mould.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/bob-mould\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bob-mould\" data-tag=\"bob-mould\">Bob Mould<\/a>\u2019s raging new song \u201cAmerican Crisis\u201d starts with a full-on scream.<\/p>\n<p>The track will appear on his upcoming 14th solo LP, <em>Blue Hearts<\/em>, and it vibrates with urgency as he sings, \u201cI never thought I\u2019d see this bullshit again.\u201d The lyrics compare the current political and social environments to the Eighties, alluding to the way AIDS claimed innumerable lives, and he caps it with a cutting chorus, \u201cWelcome back to American crisis\/No telling what the price is.\u201d It\u2019s an aggressive first taste of the album, which is due out September 25th.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018American Crisis\u2019 is a tale of two times: Past Time and Present Time,\u201d Mould said in a statement. \u201cThe parallels between 1984 and 2020 are a bit scary for me: telegenic, charismatic leaders, praised and propped up by extreme Evangelicals, either ignoring an epidemic (HIV\/AIDS) or being outright deceitful about a pandemic (COVID-19).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The song represents a stark about-face from Mould\u2019s last album, last year\u2019s almost optimistic-sounding <em>Sunshine Rock<\/em>, although he said in a statement <em>Blue Hearts<\/em> was \u201cthe catchiest batch of protest songs I\u2019ve ever written in one sitting.\u201d The artist, who previously played guitar and sang for H\u00fcsker D\u00fc, wrote much of the album over a three-day period in January.<\/p>\n<p>Mould said the album is inspired by the anger he feels for what he sees going on in the country now compared to when he was a closeted gay man in H\u00fcsker D\u00fc. The parallels between then and now roiled his blood: \u201cThese fuckers tried to kill me once. They didn\u2019t do it. They scared me. I didn\u2019t do enough. Guess what? I\u2019m back, and we\u2019re back here again. And I\u2019m not going to sit quietly this time and worry about alienating anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He made the record in Chicago with engineer Beau Sorenson, who has collaborated frequently with Mould, and his long-running band, bassist Jason Narducy and drummer Jon Wurster.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2019 interview, Mould told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/bob-mould-interview-sunshine-rock-berlin-husker-du-grant-hart-789799\/\">Rolling Stone<\/a><\/em> he\u2019d written a couple of songs in protest of the Trump administration but had decided to hold them back on the last album. \u201cI\u2019ve been through a lot of bad times in my life, and this is the worst political solution I\u2019ve ever seen,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cBut damned if I\u2019m going to pay service to it by naming it and letting it take up my space. It already takes up too much space.\u201d Asked if he\u2019d be releasing the song he\u2019d written soon, he replied, \u201cIf I have to.
