{"id":808070,"date":"2020-06-04T06:09:29","date_gmt":"2020-06-04T12:09:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=1009888"},"modified":"2020-06-04T06:09:29","modified_gmt":"2020-06-04T12:09:29","slug":"ellen-degeneres-discusses-george-floyd-protests-with-atlanta-mayor-keisha-lance-bottoms-van-jones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/ellen-degeneres-discusses-george-floyd-protests-with-atlanta-mayor-keisha-lance-bottoms-van-jones\/","title":{"rendered":"Ellen DeGeneres Discusses George Floyd Protests With Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, Van Jones"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Screen-Shot-2020-06-04-at-8.08.12-AM.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ellen-degeneres\/\">Ellen DeGeneres<\/a> taped the first episode of her talk show since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/george-floyd-protests\">George Floyd protests<\/a> erupted around the country, and she dedicated her time to discussing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/black-lives-matter\">Black Lives Matter<\/a> and the need for white people to speak up against racial injustice.<\/p>\n<p>She spoke first to the show\u2019s resident dancer, Stephen \u201ctWitch\u201d Boss, who told her that getting called out on social media is a necessary discomfort for educating oneself in this moment. \u201cYou have people that can call you and, from a place of love, say, \u2018Yo, I saw what you were trying to say, but next time word it this way, because this,&#8217;\u201d he said. \u201cAnd you know it\u2019s coming from a place of love rather than, \u2018We\u2019re gonna tear a celebrity down.\u2019 We don\u2019t have to worry about that right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ellen also invited Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms on, who outlined her discussions with local activists in her city to work toward racial justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have articulated our grievances, we\u2019re angry, but now we\u2019ve gotta formalize it, so that we\u2019ll know what the point of satisfaction is in this country, and there\u2019s so much work to be done,\u201d she said. Bottoms mentioned collaborating with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/killer-mike\">Killer Mike<\/a>, sharing civil rights documents that she had pulled from the Sixties. \u201cWhat I said to him is, \u2018We\u2019ve gotta leave this conversation and create a true framework.\u2019 Our young people don\u2019t have any direction, and there is no clear leadership, but we\u2019ve been through this before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/van-jones\">Van Jones<\/a> appeared on the show, characterizing Floyd\u2019s death as a lynching and explaining the existence of black Americans and white Americas as \u201ctwo different countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe person sitting next to you in a cubicle or on the bus or on an airplane \u2014 if they have skin that looks like mine, we are literally in a different movie,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s so hard to believe that.
