Jared Polis signed an executive order Monday, June 1<\/a>, transitioning safer-at-home messaging to \u201cSafer at Home and in the Vast, Great Outdoors.\u201d The new order permitted short-term rentals to open as of June 1.<\/p>\n<p>Summit County had requested a variance from Gov. Jared Polis\u2019 safer-at-home order on May 15 to open restaurants and short-term rentals, but that request&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/news\/summit-county-grapples-with-variance-denial-as-restaurants-are-given-a-limited-green-light-statewide\/\">was later denied based on the county\u2019s case data<\/a>. Because of the denial, the county had to wait on the state executive order.<\/p>\n<p>In the state order, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has offered guidance for thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing rental spaces between guest use, among other safety measures. <\/p>\n<p>\u2014 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/profile\/libby-stanford\/\">Libby Stanford<\/a><strong> <\/strong>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/profile\/taylor-sienkiewicz\/\">Taylor Sienkiewicz<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h4>2. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/news\/crowd-gathers-in-breckenridge-to-peacefully-protest-racial-injustice\/#vf-de0c7646-57d2-40c7-a8f9-e3d569cde411\" target=\"_blank\">Crowd gathers in Breckenridge to peacefully protest racial injustice<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Summit County residents and others dressed in black and carried signs while marching through Breckenridge last week to shine a light on ongoing racial injustices and police brutality throughout the country.<\/p>\n<p>The protest came together quickly with a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/onemansjunksummitcounty\/permalink\/1407140882813041\/\" target=\"_blank\">call to action going out on the One Man\u2019s Junk Summit County<\/a>&nbsp;Facebook page Sunday afternoon. Community members answered the call and arrived to stand in solidarity with black Americans around the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters took turns standing on a table in front of the crowd and sharing their own experiences with racial injustice, their frustrations with acts of police violence like the recent killing of George Floyd, their concerns with local issues like a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/news\/dillon-police-ask-public-for-help-identifying-man-who-wore-klan-mask-into-grocery-store\/\">man wearing a KKK mask into the Dillon City Market<\/a>&nbsp;and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this was needed,\u201d said Tom Nielson, a Breckenridge resident who organized the protest alongside Evin Harris. \u201cThis is happening everywhere around the country, and I don\u2019t think Summit County should be left to the side, especially being a dominantly white community. We do have some diversity here, and that showed today. But we need to make this community aware that these things are real even in our community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2014<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/profile\/sawyer-dargonne\/\">Sawyer D&#8217;Argonne<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h4>3. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/news\/man-remains-missing-after-tubing-colorado-river-on-sunday\/\" target=\"_blank\">Man remains missing after tubing Colorado River on Sunday<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>A man in his 30s disappeared Sunday, May 31 after getting separated from a group of friends while floating the Upper Colorado River in an inner tube, according to the Grand County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p>He was last seen in the water by his inner tube near the Eye of the Needles rapid. It was reported he was not wearing a lifejacket. On Friday, the man was identified as Shawn S. Diaz, 36, from the Denver metro area. On Friday, the man had still not been found, and water operations had been suspended unless new leads arose. The sheriff\u2019s office said they are looking at the case as a potential drowning.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014<em> Sky-Hi News<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>4. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/news\/community-weighs-in-on-breckenridges-pedestrian-only-main-street\/\" target=\"_blank\">Community weighs in on Breckenridge\u2019s pedestrian-only Main Street<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/news\/breckenridge-passes-resolution-for-pedestrian-only-main-street\/\">Breckenridge Town Council passed a resolution<\/a>&nbsp;approving the closure of Main Street to motor vehicle traffic and opening it to pedestrians and outdoor shopping and dining, set to begin June 12 and last for about eight weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Following the decision, business owners and residents in Breckenridge have responded with a wide spectrum of opinions. Some believe it will bring much-needed business and promote physical distancing while others think it will give some businesses an unfair advantage and create traffic and parking issues.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Snider \u2014 owner of Daylight Donuts, which is north of the closure area \u2014 said he was concerned about the traffic and parking issues the plan could cause.<\/p>\n<p>On the opposite end of town, Sara Cox, owner of The Crown, said she is excited to see how the closure works.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that this has always been something that the town has been doing for years, and so I think it\u2019s a good opportunity for us to check it out,\u201d Cox said. \u201cTalking with some of my fellow business owners, everyone feels optimistic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/profile\/taylor-sienkiewicz\/\">Taylor Sienkiewi<\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/profile\/taylor-sienkiewicz\/\" target=\"_blank\">cz<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h4>5. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/news\/blue-river-in-silverthorne-closed-due-to-high-water\/#:~:text=The%20Summit%20County%20Sheriff's%20Office%20and%20town%20of%20Silverthorne%20have,being%20released%20from%20the%20dam.\" target=\"_blank\">Blue River in Silverthorne closed due to high water<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>The Summit County Sheriff\u2019s Office and town of Silverthorne temporarily closed the Blue River from the base of the Dillon Dam to the Sixth Street Bridge in Silverthorne last week.
