Leon Bridges<\/a> has collaborated with Los Angeles hip-hop and jazz artist Terrace Martin on his latest track, \u201cSweeter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Released in the midst of protests around the country<\/a> calling for an end to systemic racism, the song is a thoughtful meditation on what it\u2019s like to live under cyclical oppression and prejudice from the state. \u201cHoping for a life more sweeter\/Instead I\u2019m just a story repeating\/Why do I fear with\u2005skin\u2005dark as night?\/Can\u2019t\u2005feel peace with those judging eyes,\u201d Bridges sings over a programmed drum beat and Martin\u2019s light saxophone accents.<\/p>\n

He later makes reference to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., asking why we seem to be repeating the same fight that older generations of black activists were a part of: \u201cI thought we moved on from the darker days\/Did the words of the King disappear in the air\/Like a butterfly?\u201d<\/p>\n

This is Bridges\u2019 first new music release since April when he teamed up with John Mayer for the quarantine-appropriate song \u201cInside Friend.\u201d<\/a> Bridges and Mayer had recorded and shelved the song in 2019 but decided to release it during the ongoing pandemic. The duo later released an indoor music video<\/a> for the track.<\/p>\n

In February, Bridges shared a collaborative EP<\/a> with the Texas psych-funk trio Khruangbin<\/a>.<\/p>\n
