{"id":808274,"date":"2020-06-11T08:00:06","date_gmt":"2020-06-11T14:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=1012982"},"modified":"2020-06-11T08:00:06","modified_gmt":"2020-06-11T14:00:06","slug":"bully-drops-chumbawamba-inspired-where-to-start-teases-new-album","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/ksmt\/music-news\/bully-drops-chumbawamba-inspired-where-to-start-teases-new-album\/","title":{"rendered":"Bully Drops Chumbawamba-Inspired \u2018Where to Start,\u2019 Teases New Album"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alicia Bognanno channeled 1997 Chumbawamba classic \u201cTubthumping\u201d when it came to writing her new single, \u201cWhere to Start\u201d \u2014 the first song off of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/bully\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bully\" data-tag=\"bully\">Bully<\/a>\u2019s upcoming third album, <em>Sugaregg<\/em> (out August 21 via Subpop).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was listening to \u2018Tubthumping\u2019 by Chumbawamba and picking apart the melodic structure and sort of trying to mimic that,\u201d Bognanno tells <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cI\u2019m not even joking; it still makes me laugh to think about. But let\u2019s be real, that is undeniably a solid song. \u2018Where to Start\u2019 addresses the frustration that comes along with love having the ability to fully control your mood and mental state for better or worse. It was therapeutic to funnel some lightheartedness into what can be an otherwise draining state of mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1012996\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1012996\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1012996 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/6b953025-fb0d-468c-aa37-86c0d58cf74b.jpg?w=300\" alt width=\"300\" height=\"300\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhere to Start\u201d boasts Bully\u2019s characteristic high-energy snarl, as growling guitars lead into Bognanno\u2019s raspy-throated condemnation: \u201cI don\u2019t know where to start\/I don\u2019t know where to start with you.\u201d Decidedly more jangly guitars then usher us all the way into the guts of the song \u2014 a mixture of sweet and sour, soft and frustrated.<\/p>\n<p>The video for the track \u2014 directed by Alan Del Rio Ortiz \u2014 was shot in isolation due to COVID-19 and features sequins, blood, bubbles and Bognanno\u2019s dog, Mezzi. It\u2019s a dizzy breakdown in a bathroom \u2014 something we can all likely relate to at present.<\/p>\n<p>The record was produced and mixed by John Congleton and Bognanno and marks a change in the way the latter makes music. \u201cThere was a change that needed to happen and it happened on this record,\u201d she says. \u201cDerailing my ego and insecurities allowed me to give these songs the attention they deserved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere to Start\u201d was produced by Bognanno and Graham Walsh.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast to 2017\u2019s <em>Losing<\/em>, Bognanno says \u201cthere are more songs about erratic, dysfunctional love in an upbeat way, like, \u2018I\u2019m going down and that\u2019s the only way I want to go because the momentary joy is worth it.\u2019\u201d That shift in mindset also comes from Bognanno finding proper treatment for her bipolar 2 disorder.&nbsp;\u201cBeing able to finally navigate that opened the door for me to write about it,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>The upcoming album comes on the heels of Bognanno composing songs for 2019 film <em>Her Smell<\/em>, starring Elisabeth Moss as a fictional rock star. \u201cPeople asked if I\u2019d play those songs with Bully but the whole point was for them to not be Bully songs,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was nice to get my head out of my own ass for a second and work on a project for someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bully, <em>Sugaregg<\/em> Tracklist<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.
