Jarvis Cocker<\/a>\u2019s Jarv Is\u2026 has released \u201cSave the Whale,\u201d the latest offering from the band\u2019s upcoming debut Beyond the Pale<\/em><\/a>, out July 17th via Rough Trade Records.<\/p>\n

Cocker made the video from home while in lockdown; it features photos of the band\u2019s performances from the last two years. \u201cTake your foot off the gas because it\u2019s all downhill from here,\u201d he sings in an eerie drawl, sounding like a You Want It Darker<\/em> b-side. \u201cYou are a manifestation of the universe\/Your form is unimportant\/But please come over here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe title popped into my head as I was leaving the cinema after having seen Nick Broomfield\u2019s Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love documentary<\/em>,\u201d Cocker said in a statement. \u201cThe \u2018Smooth World, Wrinkly World\u2019 section came from a childhood memory of being ill: I would hear the murmuring of a large crowd accompanied by a visual image of a line drawing (rather like a Patrick Caulfield painting, I\u2019ve since realized) in which all the objects switched rapidly between being smooth and bulbous and then thin and wrinkly. It used to absolutely terrify me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWeirdly enough, Jason (our electronics wizard) said he had a similar childhood experience except he used to see a teapot surrounded by psychedelic outlines of itself,\u201d he continued. \u201cEmma, our violinist and backing vocalist, found herself singing \u2018Smooth World, Wrinkly World\u2019 as a lullaby to her 18-month-old daughter the other night. Pass it on.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSave the Whale\u201d follows the lead single \u201cMust I Evolve?<\/a>\u201d and \u201cHouse Music All Night Long.<\/a>\u201d Beyond the Pale<\/em> was originally slated for May 1st, but was rescheduled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The record marks Cocker\u2019s first new music since 2009\u2019s Further Complications.<\/em><\/p>\n
