{"id":2409542,"date":"2018-12-16T13:41:33","date_gmt":"2018-12-16T20:41:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/?p=289743"},"modified":"2018-12-16T13:41:33","modified_gmt":"2018-12-16T20:41:33","slug":"oldest-giraffe-in-north-america-dies-at-colorado-springs-zoo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/oldest-giraffe-in-north-america-dies-at-colorado-springs-zoo\/","title":{"rendered":"Oldest giraffe in North America dies at Colorado Springs zoo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>COLORADO SPRINGS (AP) \u2014 Zoo officials say the oldest giraffe in North America has died in Colorado Springs after her health rapidly declined.<\/p>\n<p>The Gazette\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gazette.com\/news\/oldest-giraffe-in-north-america--year-old-tamu-dies\/article_caa335ee-ff38-11e8-81bd-f7eb73e51ac0.html\">reports<\/a>\u00a0the 32-year-old reticulated giraffe named Tamu died Thursday at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.<\/p>\n<p>The zoo says in a statement that Tamu \u201cpassed peacefully and naturally surrounded by keepers and vet staff who cared for her deeply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Staff began to notice changes in Tamu\u2019s behavior Thursday morning and she died a couple of hours later. She had been with the zoo since April 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Tamu gave birth to six calves and had more than three dozen grandcalves and great-grandcalves.<\/p>\n<p>The herd at the Colorado Springs zoo now numbers 15 giraffes.
