The Aspen High School hockey team got a needed league win right before the holiday break when it beat visiting Steamboat Springs 4-0 on Friday night at Lewis Ice Arena.<\/p>\n
“It’s a good way to finish the year,” AHS coach Dru Lucchesi said. “It definitely gets us back on track. More so just the way they played to get the win was great. They played a very complete game tonight, which was really fun to see before heading into the break.”<\/p>\n
The Skiers led 1-0 after a period thanks to a goal by Connor Chesner. AHS outshot the Sailors 14-4 in that first period, which set the tone for the rest of the game.<\/p>\n
Aspen put some distance on its opponent with two more goals in the second period, one by Arthur Munves and another by Robbie Fitzgerald. A goal by Jackson Holmbeck in the third period finished out the contest.<\/p>\n
“It was all around a great game, and we stayed out of the box, which is unlike us. It was good,” Lucchesi said. “This is the team we knew they could be and wanted them to be and we are just going to keep working.”<\/p>\n
Logan Soderberg had 17 saves in net for the Skiers, who recorded their first shutout of the season.<\/p>\n
Steamboat fell to 2-5 overall with the loss.<\/p>\n
Aspen heads to the break with a 2-3-2 overall record. After beating Summit 6-5 in the second game of the season, the Skiers dropped three straight before last week’s tie at Doherty.<\/p>\n
Aspen is off until Jan. 4 when it plays at Glenwood Springs, a league opponent.<\/p>\n
“I hope this team that showed up tonight continues after break,” Lucchesi said. “If they can play like this the rest of the year, they’ve be doing some good stuff.”<\/p>\n
Aspen boys basketball loses in three overtimes at Telluride<\/p>\n
The Aspen High School boys basketball team played a three overtime game at Telluride on Friday night, falling 65-62 in its final contest before the holiday break.<\/p>\n
Aspen had three players finish in double figures, led by the 14 points of Jonathan Woodrow. Noah Hollander had 12 points and Tyler Ward had 10 points. By the end of the game, AHS only had four players available after four of the original eight who traveled for the game fouled out.<\/p>\n
Telluride improved to 5-3 overall with the win, which snapped a three-game losing streak. Aspen heads to the break 2-6 overall and losers of four straight.<\/p>\n
