{"id":2416150,"date":"2018-12-26T07:44:00","date_gmt":"2018-12-26T14:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/community-standouts\/"},"modified":"2018-12-26T07:44:00","modified_gmt":"2018-12-26T14:44:00","slug":"community-standouts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/community-standouts\/","title":{"rendered":"Community standouts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText DropCap\">Ask any local the best part about calling Snowmass home and you will hear as many (if not more) heartfelt sentiments on the people who make up the village as raves about the skiing and natural beauty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">While the vistas and powder days are unparalleled, what sets this little village apart are its mountain characters and sense of community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">From early-morning grooming to late-night snowcat operations \u2014 and running all of the cozy cafes and apr\u00e8s ski spots in between \u2014 it truly takes a village to sustain Snowmass&#8217; reputation as a world-class resort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The following are a few notable Snowmass characters to know this winter, spanning from the ski hill to the mall and down to Base Village.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Subhead\">Susan Cross<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Susan Cross&#8217; Snowmass story comes full circle this season, as the newly appointed mountain manager returns to the hill where her career began nearly three decades ago.<\/p>\n<div id=\"single-mid-script\" class=\"p402_hide\">\n<h2>Recommended Stories For You<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Cross also makes history as Aspen Skiing Co.&#8217;s first and only female mountain manager.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Upon relocating to the valley from Somerville, Massachusetts, Cross started working in the skier services department at Snowmass in 1991.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Over the years, Cross rose through the ranks from an entry-level representative to leading the department as its director.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In 2011, she was promoted to mountain manager at Buttermilk, thus prompting her 6.5-year hiatus from Snowmass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">When outgoing Snowmass mountain manager Steve Sewell announced his retirement in spring 2018, Skico looked to Cross to fill the longtime manager&#8217;s void at its largest ski area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">While &#8220;things have changed a little&#8221; in Snowmass since Cross&#8217; earlier days, the mountain manager is thrilled to be back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">&#8220;It&#8217;s been a warm welcome,&#8221; Cross said. &#8220;I look forward to reconnecting with people I used to work with, as well as new people in the village.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Subhead\">Dave Dugan<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Dave Dugan has talked about opening his own restaurant since he was 16 years old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Today, with a few partners, Dugan owns and runs four full-scale restaurants \u2014 Base Camp Bar &amp; Grill, Slice, Saki and State 38 \u2014 within Base Village.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Dugan&#8217;s Snowmass success story is one of hard work and sacrifice. The South Carolina native moved to the village exactly 20 years ago, seeking opportunity and also &#8220;to experience something different.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Dugan started in the local culinary scene waiting on customers at the slope-side spot where Venga Venga is currently located, and worked his way up to a number of manager positions. In 2010, a fellow Snowmass local and restaurateur approached Dugan about opening Base Camp Bar &amp; Grill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The initial lease was only three months to fill a vacancy, and while the restaurant&#8217;s debut was a &#8220;gamble&#8221; at the time, Dugan said, &#8220;We did well enough to earn a little more time, and then we ran with the ball from there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">About three years later, a similar group of partners started the Italian joint, Slice, followed by the pan-Asian spot, Saki.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Colorado-focused American restaurant State 38, which opened last ski season, is Dugan and company&#8217;s latest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Subhead\">Whitney Gordon<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Snowmass native Whitney Gordon started pouring water for thirsty skiers at her parents&#8217; iconic, mid-mountain restaurant, Gwyn&#8217;s High Alpine, at age 5.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In little time, her responsibilities ranged from baking to counting money, which was her favorite task as a child.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">It makes sense, then, that Gordon today manages the establishment that her mother and father, Gwyn Knowlton and George Gordon, opened in 1979. With its rich, 38-year-history, Gwyn&#8217;s High Alpine is a Snowmass staple and true family affair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">For Gordon and a number of loyal, longtime employees and patrons, the restaurant is synonymous with the word &#8220;family.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">&#8220;We still have so many of the same guests and their next generations coming to eat up at Gwyn&#8217;s. So many of them remember me growing up in the restaurant and now get to see my kids doing the same thing,&#8221; Gordon said. &#8220;There is a sense of family in Snowmass that you see very few other places. It extends everywhere from the post office to the police department, the employees that live and work here and all of the visitors that come back to visit each year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">A number of employees also have been with the restaurant for more than two or three decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Outside Gwyn&#8217;s \u2014 which is most known for its scratch-made soups and chili \u2014 Gordon&#8217;s favorite run is Sneaky&#8217;s. And if she is lucky enough to sneak out of the restaurant before dark, a margarita in the afternoon sun at Venga Venga is Gordon&#8217;s go-to apr\u00e8s move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Subhead\">Wendy Harris<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Like many of her peers, Wendy Harris moved to the village from the East Coast in the early &#8217;90s and worked her way up the food and beverage chain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Originally from Sunapee, New Hampshire, Harris skied to and from her first job in Snowmass at Gwyn&#8217;s High Alpine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Harris bounced around kitchens, adding to her resume for a while, working in catering for several years as well as lead banquet roles at the Viceroy Snowmass and Hotel Jerome in Aspen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In 2015, Harris assumed the general manager position at the New Belgium Ranger Station, where the Snowmass Mall and slopes meet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In May, Harris bought the business from its previous owner and is now the head honcho.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">While she may be the boss, Harris&#8217; style is hands-on and humble, as she zips around the Ranger Station \u2014 be it pressing paninis in the kitchen or sharing with patrons her vast knowledge of brews \u2014 seven days a week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">&#8220;We&#8217;re always trying to raise the bar here,&#8221; Harris said of the restaurant and bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">She credits her staff for much of the Ranger Station&#8217;s success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Asked her favorite aspect of Snowmass life, Harris said, &#8220;the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">&#8220;We all look out for each other and take care of each other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Subhead\">John Kneiper<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">John Kneiper&#8217;s Snowmass narrative, like that of Cross, also begins and resumes in the village, with a brief and recent stint at Buttermilk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">As director of Skico&#8217;s ski and snowboard school at Snowmass, Kneiper employs about 800 instructors and administrative staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Nonetheless, the former New Yorker manages to squeeze in his share of turns, his favorite run at Snowmass being Garrett&#8217;s Gulch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">As with the other mountain characters, Kneiper worked his way up the ladder, starting as a ski instructor during his first winter in the valley circa 1988-89.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Kneiper&#8217;s first 17 years with Skico were at Snowmass as an instructor and then coordinator in the Adult Alpine division.
