{"id":2424169,"date":"2019-01-07T22:16:01","date_gmt":"2019-01-08T05:16:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/aspen-voters-to-decide-redevelopment-of-aspen-mountains-base\/"},"modified":"2019-01-07T22:16:01","modified_gmt":"2019-01-08T05:16:01","slug":"aspen-voters-to-decide-redevelopment-of-aspen-mountains-base","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/aspen-voters-to-decide-redevelopment-of-aspen-mountains-base\/","title":{"rendered":"Aspen voters to decide redevelopment of Aspen Mountain\u2019s base"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In a 3-2 decision, Aspen City Council voted Monday to refer to Aspen voters on March 5 two ordinances governing the redevelopment of the base of Aspen Mountain&#8217;s west side \u2014 along with a <a id=\"N0x166ca30N0x15cd670:N0x166ca30N0x15ad700\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/aspen-city-council-commits-4-3m-to-aspen-mountain-base-redevelopment\/\">$4.36 million taxpayer subsidy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Mayor Steve Skadron and Councilman Bert Myrin were the dissenting votes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Skadron said he was not only &#8220;unsettled&#8221; but &#8220;disturbed&#8221; that the majority of council would agree to give developers public money to build their lodging properties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">He also said it is council&#8217;s job to vote on land-use applications regardless of whether it opens up government to potential lawsuits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Referring it to the voters is a cop-out and allows the conversation leading up to the election to be cast as if the city is giving developers a handout, Skadron added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">He said the Lift One Corridor project is the best he&#8217;s seen for the Lift 1A side of the mountain, but without taxpayer subsidies.<\/p>\n<div id=\"single-mid-script\" class=\"p402_hide\">\n<h2>Recommended Stories For You<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Myrin didn&#8217;t support the financial public-private partnership and the breaks developers received on affordable-housing mitigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">After Monday&#8217;s meeting, Myrin estimated that it was close to a $20 million burden on the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">&#8220;It was a very uncomfortable feeling not to make this the best it can be at the council table before sending it to the voters,&#8221; he said via email.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The other council members \u2014 Ann Mullins, Adam Frisch and Ward Hauenstein \u2014 support the subsidy, arguing that it is an important development for the future of Aspen as a resort community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The $4.36 million would be put in an irrevocable bank account to be released when a new chairlift is spinning. The money would likely come as loan from the flush Wheeler Opera House RETT fund.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The <a id=\"N0x166ca30N0x15cd6d0:N0x166ca30N0x15addc0\" href=\"http:\/\/aspen.siretechnologies.com\/SIREPub\/mtgviewer.aspx?meetid=1813&amp;doctype=AGENDA\">ordinances<\/a>, which combined are 88 pages, detail the approvals for an 81-room hotel known as the Gorsuch Haus and a 104-key Lift One Lodge timeshare project.
