{"id":2440330,"date":"2019-02-08T14:47:04","date_gmt":"2019-02-08T21:47:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/?p=297734"},"modified":"2019-02-08T14:47:04","modified_gmt":"2019-02-08T21:47:04","slug":"international-ski-federation-president-urged-to-quit-over-climate-comment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/international-ski-federation-president-urged-to-quit-over-climate-comment\/","title":{"rendered":"International Ski Federation president urged to quit over climate comment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DENVER \u2014 A group of winter-sports athletes and the world\u2019s biggest snowboard maker want the president of the International Ski Federation to resign after he spoke of \u201cso-called climate change\u201d and said he would rather deal with dictators than argue with environmentalists.<\/p>\n<p>The climate advocacy group\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/protectourwinters.org\/\">Protect Our Winters<\/a>\u00a0sent an open letter Friday urging 75-year-old Gian-Franco Kasper to step aside.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tagesanzeiger.ch\/sport\/ski-wm\/In-Diktaturen-ist-es-fuer-uns-einfacher\/story\/26126306\">In an interview with the Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger<\/a>\u00a0, Kasper said \u201cdictators can organize (big) events \u2026 without asking the people\u2019s permission\u201d and that \u201cfrom the business side, I say: I just want to go to dictatorships, I do not want to argue with environmentalists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also referenced \u201cso-called\u201d climate change, and when challenged on that, responded \u201cWe have snow, sometimes very much.\u201d He pointed to frigid temperatures at last year\u2019s Pyeongchang Olympics. \u201cTo anyone shuddering toward me, I said: Welcome to the global warming,\u201d Kasper told the newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>Kasper subsequently apologized for his comments, saying they were not meant to be taken literally. When reached by The Associated Press via email, FIS officials said they had no further comment.<\/p>\n<p>Protect Our Winters is a nonprofit formed in 2007 to combat climate change. Several dozen athletes are part of the alliance, which also includes scientists and business leaders.<\/p>\n<div id=\"single-mid-script\" class=\"p402_hide\">\n<h2>Recommended Stories For You<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In their open letter, which also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/p2a.co\/iZfSILH\">included a link<\/a>\u00a0for people to add their name to the call for Kasper\u2019s resignation, POW said the Tages-Anzeiger story \u201cconfirms what insiders in FIS meetings have told us for years: that the leadership of the organization is unwilling to acknowledge scientific evidence that threatens the entire snow industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>POW refers to studies that document the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/ecf820df97fc425aa98c42e38e8b75cb\">rapid decline of European glaciers<\/a>\u00a0, and to economic analysis that shows seasons with below-average snowfall lead to \u201cdecreased value added\u201d of more than $1 billion and 17,400 fewer jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we saw that, from our perspective, it was unacceptable to have anyone in a position of leadership in the snow-sport industry denying climate change,\u201d POW executive director Mario Molina told AP.<\/p>\n<p>POW also decided to not accept a $10,500 donation it was set to receive Sunday from U.S. Ski and Snowboard through its volunteers, coaches, and athletes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a sign of respect for them and the action they want to support, we are declining that donation and asking instead that Gian Franco Kasper be removed from his position,\u201d the open letter said.<\/p>\n<p>Snowboard maker Burton announced it would write a check to replace the USSA donation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t be giving money to Protect Our Winters when the president of your federation is denying climate change and talking about how great it is to work with dictators because you don\u2019t have to worry about protecting the environment,\u201d Donna Burton told the AP, referencing the relationship between USSA and FIS. \u201cIt\u2019s so blatant. He has to resign. It\u2019s not OK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kasper has been president of FIS since 1998. He also made headlines in 2005 for saying he didn\u2019t think ski jumping was \u201cappropriate for ladies from a medical point of view.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kasper\u2019s comments rekindled longstanding issues between the action sports community and FIS.
